Reset Your Body!

I’m not the type of person who typically tries these so-called “fad diets,” but I’m at a point in my life where I can no longer be choosy. I came across the Body Reset Diet and the name alone captured my interest. I figured my body could use a little reset button. I also knew that metabolism was important for maintaining a healthy weight. So, I decided to give this a shot, and I’m glad I did. Exercise and I have never really gotten along, but if you use all the dietary principles outlined in the book, you don’t really have to do a lot of exercise. I literally go for walks around the neighborhood and I hardly even see them as “exercise.” Of course, the food is the primary engine for increasing your metabolic rate. Although it’s mostly liquefied (soups, smoothies, etc.), the food isn’t actually that bad.

I’ve paired the Body Reset Diet with a book called Simple Natural Cures: Cheap & Effective Remedies for Everyday Common Ailments by Kevin Richardson, and I love how both guides have given me a different outlook on life. Although most of Richardson’s book deals with cures for well-known maladies, it also comes with a nutritional guide at the end. I’ve used plenty of the cures in the book, and the nutritional guide has paired nicely with the Body Reset Diet. Both are designed to keep your metabolism moving and help you shed pounds and stay healthy. It’s certainly been enormously beneficial to have both of these books in my possession.

Using the Body Reset Diet and Simple Natural Cures, I was able to lose about 10 pounds in 15 days, which is unheard of. Having never really been on a conventional diet before, I wasn’t expecting much, but this has been a godsend. Perhaps my favorite aspect of the entire program is the fact that I don’t have to do any strenuous exercise. A little walking and a little weight training are all I really have to do. Of course, if I’m feeling sick or I have some other kind of illness, I always flip open Simple Natural Cures and it helps me continue with the Body Reset regimen with ease.

Definitely worth your time and money

I love how simple this book and the program are to follow! I lost 5 lbs during the fifteen day program and am continuing my smoothie and walking regimen a week later. The concept behind the program makes sense and to see results so quickly is very encouraging. I am a lifelong athlete who, now in my thirties, never would have thought that merely walking 10,000+ steps a day would make such a difference. I also never realized that I wasn't already doing so! I lost 2" in my thighs and dropped a pant size. Yesterday was my first day back at the gym and I look forward to using Harley's program to help me drop another 5-10 lbs and improve my fitness level. I would (and have) recommend this book to anyone!

DID NOT WORK

I am over 40 and purchased this book because my metabolism has s-l-o-w-e-d down and I've gained 20 lbs over the last 2 years due to stress and a job loss which led to emotional eating. I followed the diet religiously the first five days and was STARVING by day 5...after work I came home and ate some steel cut oatmeal and added a tablespoon each of raisins and pecans so I could go to sleep without stomach pains. On page 110, he asks (after the first five days) "...how many pounds have you lost? three? five? even more?" I lost ZERO. ZILCH. NADA. NOTHING.

I have tried to eat healthy for the last 10 years, so the smoothies for me were no surprise. I cannot afford a Vitamix, but purchased one of those "blast" appliances for Christmas and it mixes pretty well. I eat kale and/or spinach every day anyway, along with various other vegetables. I was not used to eating so much fruit, though, as the carbs are really high. I was willing to give the entire program a try.

I'm thinking the reviews which suggest weight loss come from people who are 1) young, with still active metabolisms (see the celebrity endorsements), or 2) folks with a lot more than 20 pounds to lose who are used to eating massive amounts of unhealthy food every day, and so eating nutritional food and less calories resulted in weight loss.

I am extremely disappointed; I was not looking to drop 10 pounds, but was looking, as advertised, for something that would "power my metabolism, blast fat, and shed pounds in just 15 days" (from the cover). This was a waste of money for me; I wish I could get my money back.

P.S. my comments were removed from the official website; apparently, the author does not appreciate anything less than complete endorsement. Too bad, as this appears he is only interested in the money he makes off of unsuspecting consumers.

FOLLOW UP:
I continued this program for a total of 3 weeks, and actually GAINED 1 1/2 pounds. I believe that is because of the increase in carbs due to the high amount of fruits suggested in the program. I am used to eating a lot more vegetables. This program did not kick start anything; I did not lose weight, did not have an increase in energy, and do not feel like my metabolism increased. Again, I wish I could receive a refund. :-(

Excellent introduction to Reliability Analysis

Igor Bazovsky's 1961 Reliability Theory and Practice is newly available in a reprint edition by Dover Publications (2004). Once again, Dover should be thanked for restoring to availability a classic which, while dating to the earlier years, in this case, of reliability analysis in engineering, presents the field in exceptional clarity. Dover provides this service, moreover, at a price which is a small fraction of what most technical textbook publishers would charge for an exact reprint of even a forty-year-old textbook, or of what some used booksellers would demand for a remaining original edition in a discipline such as applied statistics (often much more than a new book would cost!). Contemporary texts frequently become mired in mathematical formulae, without presentation of a coherent, concrete idea of the area, so that is difficult to see the forest for the trees. Bazovsky's text is outstanding in explaining what reliability engineering and analysis is all about, in well-written, well-paced, well-organized, ordinary language. In order to fully understand the formulae which Bazovsky presents, one must have sufficient command of algebraic and exponential functions, some exposure to calculus, and an introductory level familiarity with statistics. Just the same, one could take the formulae on faith, and gain a substantial awareness of the issues and methods of reliability analysis, providing a decent foundation for more a more contemporary treatment of the field. Somewhere between, where many readers may be poised, the author presents in a logical, practically motivated exposition the fundamental ideas of reliability engineering, from simple failure rates, to more complicated systems, progressively introducing at a manageable pace such concepts as wearout, early failure, replacement strategies and policies, and series of components. Unlike authors who may initially introduce a subject in language accessible to a novice but rapidly change to an exclusive emphasis on complex mathematical relationships, Bazovsky maintains a conversational tone throughout, with explanation in plain language remaining dominant, even as progressively more complicated ideas are presented in symbolic language. Where formulas are presented, a rare balance is maintained between excessive derivational detail and a sincere effort to carry the reader along without undue frustration. The author's clear objective is to bring the reader along and to teach effectively, with concern for the student's developing understanding. Thus, this work remains an outstanding introduction to reliability theory and, thanks to Dover, can continue to provide a guide to those who are weary of an ethic of avoiding patiently-presented explanation and concrete, numerical examples which often seems to be de rigueur for professional self-respect among contemporary authors in quantitative applications.

An outstanding text

I was fortunate enough to find this gem of a book in a used bookstore, and it quickly found a place among my favorite technical references. Like so many engineering texts of the late 1950's and early 1960's, Bazovsky's concise treatise masterfully balances technical thoroughness with readability. The technical content is all there, but presented in prose that is clear and accessible to a wide range of technical readers.

Kudos to Dover for re-printing this masterpiece, and offering it at such an affordable price!

A complete work, a milestone for reliability

As correctly stated in the previous reviews about this book, we are dealing with a dated work ( first edition is dated back 1961...). Nevertheless the Bazowsky's work is, as matter of the fact, a masterpiece really well written and easy to read.

I bought this book with the aim of giving a theoretical frameset to the reliability tests we performed on the product we build in our factory with the goal of developing a judicious risk assessment for some kind of failures we observed during the lab tests and from the final users in the market, and I discovered in it much more.

Starting with the realibility concept and definition, passing through whareout and Chance effect the "reliability" subject is completely developed.

Peculiarly interesting are chapters 18-19 ("Reliability Design and consideration" and "Design Analysis examples"). Also chapter 8 ("Early failures and the life function of components") and 17 ("System maintenance, availability and dependability") are interesting by offering the reader immediately practical application.

Since the reliability science had a big development momentum in the Electronic component manufacturing/assembly industry you will find that most examples came from that background but it is not so difficult to abstract the theory in the field you work or you want to generalize about.

Finishing, this book as the rare quality of being complete: both from the theoretical and the practical point view. Since the theoretical stand point is well developed a strong mathematical and statistical background is needed for fully understanding the paperwork. Be aware of this. But the fatigue is well compensated with the results of having a clear picture of the subject. 5 stars with no doubt even If compared with the really low price of this new paperback edition.

An Amazon Best Book of the Month, October 2014: This is a book that I did not expect to enjoy. Having finished it—and feeling, as I do now, that A Brief History of Seven Killings is one of the best books I’ve read all year—I went back and identified the reasons why I did not expect to like it. Reason #1— The story is an oral history told in multiple voices: that’s true, but James’ enormous talent makes the multiple voices work. Reading the novel is an immersive experience—the characters are real, they are engaging, and James uses them to look at all sides of the story. Yes, the multiple points-of-view are difficult at first, but each voice quickly distinguishes itself as unique and important; the payoff is a novel of sweeping scope and emotion. Reason #2—Many of the characters speak in Jamaican patois: like many readers, I’m not a big fan of dialect on the page. Tell me what they say, not necessarily how they say it. But James pulls it off with remarkable ease. I expected the patois to start to grate once I got further into the book. It never did. The language only added to my understanding of the story and its characters. Reason #3—Violence: this is not an easy book, particularly when it comes to violence. It starts early, and there’s a lot of it (certainly more than seven killings). But it’s there for a reason. By showing the violence, the poverty, and the struggle to survive in 70s Jamaica, James illustrates how the ghetto can change a person. Over time, we see how every man and woman is changed. Reason #4 –It’s about Jamaica: I hesitate to admit that I wasn’t initially interested in a book set in Jamaica. Am I just not interested in a world so different from mine? Whatever the underlying reason, I was wrong to think that way. I could take the easy route and say that this novel is about something more than Jamaica, but that seems obvious. All I can say is: these people were real to me. And like all great novels, James’ work drew me in, entertained me, and changed me in ways I could not have anticipated. –Chris Schluep

About the Author
Marlon James was born in Jamaica in 1970. His most recent novel, A Brief History of Seven Killings, won the 2015 Man Booker Prize. It was also a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and won the OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature for fiction, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for fiction, and the Minnesota Book Award. It was also a New York Times Notable Book. James is also the author of The Book of Night Women, which won the 2010 Dayton Literary Peace Prize and the Minnesota Book Award, and was a finalist for the 2010 National Book Critics Circle Award in fiction and an NAACP Image Award. His first novel, John Crow’s Devil, was a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for first fiction and the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and was a New York Times Editors’ Choice. James lives in Minneapolis.

Ambitious, Well Rendered, And Difficult

A BRIEF HISTORY OF SEVEN KILLINGS is bound to be a bestseller as it has an intriguing premise inspired by fact, an interesting setting and many critical endorsements even before the book is actually released. However prospective readers should also know this is a long complicated book that has a diverse cast of characters telling the story. Thankfully there is a list of seventy-six characters mentioned by these narrators sorted by the location and time period where they appear helpfully supplied at the beginning of the book. This list even includes a brief statement of these players' roles in the novel. I admit to turning to these four pages frequently in the course of reading the novel. Some of the narration uses a great deal of slang that is occasionally difficult to figure out even using context clues. I found myself often using internet resources to decipher some of this language as well as to get more background information about Jamaica in the 1970's, 80's and early 90's. This is certainly an ambitious book and it is well rendered. However the casual reader may want to realize the investment in time and effort needed to appreciate it.

The most challenging novel I've read this year

This was probably the most challenging novel I've read in several years. Who am I kidding? There's no probably about it. Marlon James has constructed an incredibly complex story, and it took every bit of memory available to me to keep up. He was kind enough to include a cast of characters, but I made it a point to refer to it as little as possible, opting instead to try and follow the story under my own power.

Add to the story's complexity the fact that most of the characters are from the ghettos of Kingston, and speak in a patois that takes some serious acclimation initially, and will slow your reading speed to a crawl at times. Amazingly though, after spending nearly a week with these characters, I felt like I had picked up the meanings quite well and could read those sections much quicker. Strangely, for me, this adaptation was the most rewarding aspect of this particular reading experience. In fact, as much respect as I now have for Marlon James' talent, I have to admit that I did not actually enjoy this novel, and found it made for an almost constantly uncomfortable reading experience.

The last time I felt the inability to enjoy such a well written book, I was reading In Other Rooms, Other Wonders, a Pulitzer finalist. Both books require the reader to spend most of their time in very difficult places. By difficult I mean places where innocents suffer a great deal of agony and injustice, and both books left me feeling a certain hopelessness from which I felt the reader was never released. That may well be James' intention, and the fact that he could take me to such places and make them feel so real as to make me uncomfortable is a testament to his talents.

This novel contains a great deal of incredibly graphic violence (including rape), and in fact I cannot name a more graphically violent novel that I've read in the past few years. Perhaps Philip Meyers' "The Son" comes close? There is also a lot of quite graphic sex, and since the majority of the novel's many characters are hardcore criminals, the language is very often coarse throughout the story. The number of such moments are what makes it difficult for me to recommend the book to anyone whose taste and tolerance for such things I do not know well. But the novel seems to me to have been an honest one, and as you wallow in the depths and the dregs with these gangsters, you sense the suffering from which they were born, and and begin to understand their Machiavellian existence. Again, James was able to take me to some places I've certainly never been, but I can't necessarily say I'm glad I went there.

Overall, this is a brilliantly executed novel by a man who possesses a great deal of talent, and yet it is a book that is likely to prove a challenging read to most, for the reasons I've listed and more. I can't say that I'm happy to have read it, but I can certainly appreciate the art that James has created, and I do take some personal satisfaction in having followed such an intricate story to its end. Reading difficult fiction isn't always enjoyable, but it is usually beneficial, and for that I can say I'm grateful to have read A Brief History of Seven Killings.

This one will challenge you -powerful writing

To say this book is impressive is an understatement. But before I go further, let me state that it was a difficult one to complete. I struggled through the dialog, constantly checked the very long list of characters, and wished for another listing to decipher the slang. Sometimes it took me a minute or two to realize what the character's point was and I began that section again. In spite of the difficulties to get through this hard and complex novel, it is ambitious as well. It covers three decades of the unstable history of Jamaica with its stark poverty, the attempted assassination of Bob Marley, and horrific violence told through many voices and dialects. I feel in the future this author will be reading sections to a captivated audience. I hope that he does because I plan to be there, if I can. Unflinching in scope, this young writer is one to watch.
