Kindle format is terrible - do not buy!

I should have read the one-star review prior to purchasing the Kindle version. Absolutely terrible formatting as it is a PDF or picture with such small print I was unable to read it and apparently CAN NOT return this book. Amazon needs to fix this formatting issue. I have hundreds of kindle books and have not come across anything like this--there are more white space than words (see picture below).

Lives up to the title!

This is a fantastic book to help people understand the terribly complex subject of chronic pain. I hate that the Kindle version prompted such poor ratings, because the actual content of the book is excellent. I have the print version. Refer to reviews of the original version, most of which are 5-star ratings. As a psychologist treating chronic pain, and training soon-to-be psychologists, I'm always looking to deepen my understanding of pain processes, and strategies for self management. This book is incredibly helpful. In addition to increasing my own knowledge, this book also provides great examples for explaining the subject to others. Since it does not go into too much intimidating biological detail, it's digestible by a wide range of educational backgrounds. I love that for such a serious and challenging subject, the authors manage to include ample humor to make it an entertaining read, as well as informative. If you're leery of the price, search for videos of the authors presenting this material on the Web - watching a couple presentations (well, in truth, more than a couple...I became a little obsessed one Friday night...that's just HOW impressed I was!) inspired me to go ahead and make the purchase. And now that I've read it, I've asked my facility to order copies for my trainees each year. So, maybe avoid the Kindle version for now, but you can't go wrong with the book itself!

Amazing book to understand pain

The printed version of this book is amazing. I was surprised that it had such a low score. It is meant for health professionals but anyone with a basic understanding of biology/psychology can pick it up and understand it. The concepts are mind-blowing but they are presented in a very easy to understand way. As a physical therapist, I have a great way to explain pain to my patients.

Wait....1950s recipes...microwave?

SOME of these recipes are NOT from the 1950s "golden age of american home cooking". Some of the recipes, at least the cooking instructions with the recipes, are clearly more modern.

While the book is full of fine and simple 1950s recipes, and has lots of fun, nostalgic 1950s drawings and photos of husbands and wives in the kitchen, or by the backyard barbeque grill. And naturally, (recent, not 1950s) photos of what the food of what its supposed to look like after its been cooked and prepared, I do have a minor quibble. Some of the directions in the recipes (just a few of the recipes, mind you, not all) calls for the cook to use a microwave oven.

I'm looking over these specific recipes and thinking, "wait....1950s recipes? Microwave oven?" Now, I KNOW that microwave ovens were invented well before the 1950s. But by the 1950s, microwave ovens were not yet ready for the everyday home kitchen. By 1971, only about 1% of homes would have microwave ovens (25% by the 1980s). So I'm quite sure that in the 1950s, the average common housewife didnt cook using a microwave oven. They used the usual gas or electric oven (sometimes wood burning oven).

I cannot speak for everybody, but as for myself, I just dont like food that has been cooked by a microwave oven. In my opinion, food is of much better taste and quality when its been cooked in a gas oven. So it was disheartening to find recipes that look very good and that I would like to try (Burgundy Beef Stew is one of a few examples), but I find myself rather hamstrung by the instructions in the recipes that tells me to cook the recipe in a microwave oven.

MOST of the recipes in the book indeed has instructions as to how to cook your recipe using a gas oven. But the ones that call on you to cook in a microwave, they have no alternative instructions in case you would rather cook in a regular gas oven. Its a bit of a disappointment, but other than those few "cook in microwave" recipes, the book is quite good.

I was a bit skeptical about "A True Love Story" part of the title

I was a bit skeptical about "A True Love Story" part of the title, but it reads just like a genuine journal of a man struggling between love for his family and falling for a girl who is head over heels in love with him. The story is about a 'made it in life' man who cheats on his wife by continuing a relationship with a 'Sugar Babe' from the internet, and the emotional highs and lows the two lovers go through while trying to make sense of the relationship. It is all so wrong, but so sweetly (and erotically) right too. An emotional read that keeps one turning pages to see where it all ends.

The author keeps the flow true to life, with its ups and downs, unrealistic expectations of others, while glossing over your own shortcomings, and then feeling bad about the whole thing. It actually felt a bit like watching the Game of Thrones, where no one is inherently good OR bad, and life just IS. The end was just what one would expect of a real life illicit romance - with everybody living happily ever after... well sort of.

On the negative side, the self analysis by the story teller was a bit too much sometimes and some of the emails he supposedly sent read like a psychoanalyst's report. I would have thrown in the towel on a relationship after receiving a couple of those! (But on the other hand it is very much believable that an author would write such verbose emails in real life too. And the girl's responses are very authentic too - sometimes unpredictable, sometimes giving him the silent treatment. Soo true to life!).

It was a good read - a glimpse into the secret life of a married man, struggling with his conscience and his heart, that made me re think about my own relationships, my motives and how they could be perceived by others.

Warning: There are strong erotic situations interspersed throughout the story, which are titillating, but not quite pornographic.

Be prepared to laugh, to cry, to lust, and to fall in love

I have been looking for a story that I can keep in my own personal library--a story that I can dive into and read time and time again to escape everything else. "Sugar Baby: A True Love Story", while I have only read it once (so far--and within a matter of hours, mind you), is my most recent infatuation. Everything about the book seemed so wrong and so right at the same time; I entered the world of Ryan and Kris and was immediately bewitched by their tragic circumstances, but the intense eminence that blossomed from it.

I am enamored by this Anonymous author, who presents a seemingly twisted affair precisely as it was in the book's title. The love story is raw, and as a reader I feel that I am privileged to know all of the beautiful, naked details between the lovers through a series of dates, cleverly composed in a style that is similar to a series of journal entries. This book makes me question some of my own morals and personal beliefs, as all great pieces do. I was grief-stricken when I reached the final page, the final sentence. It was a reminder of one of the book's themes that great things must come to an end.

"Sugar Baby" is one of those gems that you find in a used book store, years down the road when the author and his muse has returned to the dust of the Earth. It is one of those books that you want to keep secret, because you know it has potential. If I were so selfish, I wouldn't be so inclined as to proclaim my desire for this love story to touch a wider audience.

Well done, Ryan Lee (whoever you are).

Real life drama and a fascinating read!

You see the ads online and hear the talk show hosts talk about it on TV, but there's nothing like reading a firsthand account of other people's lives and the choices they make. That being said, I found this book hard to put down and finished it in less than a day. Very interesting, real life drama, and beyond the physical attachment was a lot of emotion; however, I've never been able to figure out how men or women can do this and not get caught, ESPECIALLY when there's as much emotional attachment as there seemed to be between these two. The sugar daddy is honest about his character flaws though, probably to everyone but his wife. Given that, I wonder how his wife has never suspected anything at all. There needs to a be sequel to tell us what happens beyond this book. Obviously, I don't condone the cheating, etc., but these true stories-I have to admit-are a fascinating read.

FRANK KUSY is a professional travel writer with nearly thirty years experience in the field. He has written guides to India, Thailand, Burma, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Of this, his first work, the travelogue Kevin and I in India (1986), the Mail on Sunday wrote: 'This book rings so true of India that most of us will be glad we don't have to go there ourselves.' Born in England (of Polish-Hungarian parents), Frank left Cardiff University for a career in journalism and worked for a while at the Financial Times. India is his first love, the only country he knows which improves on repeated viewings. He still visits for business and for pleasure at least once a year. He lives in Surrey, England, with his wife Andrea (aka 'Madge') and his little cat Sparky. Funny, fantastic,fabulous astonishing tale!

This is another wonderful action packed and sometimes astonishing tale from Frank Kusy. He escapes from a rather complicated situation in his love life by heading off on a trip from Bangkok to Bali to write another travel journal. Immediately he finds trouble in Bangkok when the motorbike he is a passenger on crashes into a limo and he is held at gunpoint until the guards go through his wallet find his press card and let him go. He is a marvellously gifted storyteller and the incident of the beard dying accident had me almost crying with laughter! The hotel he is staying in is evacuated, police sirens are going off, fellow guests are accusing him of murder – but no – he had ‘simply’ dyed his beard. Frank does not like the usual touristy places and wants to go off the beaten track to give readers a sense of the real country. There are some wonderful vivid descriptions which help to bring the places alive for the us ‘ Colourful clusters of butterflies floated up to us, and the air was alive with the sound of bees, hornets, dragonflies and cicadas’ He has us laughing at his attempts to lead a Trailfinders tour and his ‘marriage’ to Nicky in Bali. I loved the voodoo driver who prayed at his clapped out bus. One Guest House owner offers him accommodation then locks him in an insect infested room! There is no doubt that Frank suffers to get material for his travelogues! At one point he is accused of being an illegal alien led away in handcuffs and held in a room with a noose hanging from the ceiling! He finds himself near a war zone. He learns to ask for food with no frog in it. He goes to Australia with a crazy woman. He has to fight off an enthusiastic Chom! And there’s even more fantastic and incredible tales all in this book. Highly recommended I think I’m just going to have to read it again. I hope there’s more in the future.

A scoundrel, a camel, and everything in between.

Frank Kusy does not disappoint with his newest chronicles of his adventures and misadventures! I love his wit so much and his ability to bring you right into his world and memory with words, descriptions, and in this case pictures. For those of us who do judge a book by it's cover that also does not disappoint- this cover with the elephant and the vivid colors really stands out on my kindle.

What comes through most in this work by Kusy is his vivid love of the world and new experiences. In a time where we keep so much close to the vest Kusy freely writes about falling in and out of love and making bad choices based on his love life. It's really refreshing to hear the honest stories that often mimic what I experience myself.

You would think that because he writes with so much candor that he might lack detail in his journey but he doesn't. Along with his person triumphs and stumbles he brings us through parts of the world we may never see. Asia so far off the beaten trail that you'd almost have to be Asian to be there- right into Australia with their spider craziness.

Everything from a harem of girlfriends to camels as gifts, Kusy is once again a delight to read. If he keeps writing, I may never have to leave America again.

A talented memoir writer

Off the Beaten Track is a memoir of long time travel writer Frank Kusy, author of the AIA Seal of Excellence winner Rupee Millionaire. Kusy’s experience as a writer shows in the fluid, vibrant prose he uses to describe his travels in Asia in the seventies. This is an engaging story full of anecdotes that have you smiling and shaking your head at the antics of the young Kusy.

The difficulty in memoir writing is to find a thread that unifies the story in the way that the plot does in fiction. Generally, real life isn’t as dramatic as fiction, and in unskilled hands, it’s easy to lose a reader if the account of a person’s life wanders aimlessly. This would be particularly easy to do in a travel memoir, but Kusy has worked skilfully with his material and used the thread of his efforts to both secure and avoid getting a wife in the same way that a fiction writer would use a plot. Though the various anecdotes are interesting in themselves, without this emphasis, they would not provide such a satisfying whole. We want to read to the end to see how young Frank’s bumbling efforts at romance turn out. Frank is an endearing character and his perspective on the world and efforts to live as a Buddhist add another layer of interest to the memoir.

The other theme, as the title suggests, is his desire to get off the beaten track, and the events that thwart his attempts to really experience Asia without a whiff of tourists provide further interest beyond a mere account of his travels. Though not as dramatic as Rupee Millionaires, it’s still a great read, especially for anyone interested in travel in Asia. Highly recommended.

The editing is excellent. My only misgiving was that I would have liked the author to have gone more deeply into some aspects of his journey; for example, the ceremony when the Joju Gohonzon was enshrined in the main temple in Jakarta. No doubt the author has his reasons for staying clear of it, but I felt it was a missed opportunity to go deeper into the culture.

All up Kusy is a very talented memoir writer and this book should be enjoyed by a wide variety of people.

Good overview with discussion of "why" certain setup choices are important.

I wanted a good overview with some detail to expose me to Xero before I started using the program (I'm a CPA). This book fit the bill. You don't get every list and screen shot, but the author provides commentary on not only the how to set up major modules, but she also takes time to explain why the user needs to think about the module and its setup.

If you are looking for a very detailed manual, this is not the book to buy. However, if you want an excellent overview with good instructions on set up, the book will save a lot of time.

Xero's online help is more useful and current

In my experience, this book was a total waste of paper, time, and money. I am really surprised it got any good reviews, and I am only submitting this review because I bought the book based on its positive reviews on Amazon. The content of this book is less helpful than what is readily available in Xero's online help modules. There are no unique tips or tricks or anything of value offered to someone (like me) who is already familiar with Xero's basics and limitations. I learned nothing from this book- (other than to return books like this within the allowable return time frame so I am only out the return shipping cost and not the entire purchase price).
