A unique and moving work
By David D. Salisbury
Fiona Tinker's book Pagan Portals: Pathworking Through Poetry is one of the most unique works I've read in quite awhile. As someone who reads a great number of Pagans books on a constant basis, I found it very refreshing to read something like this - something that has truly not been done before.

Tinker's book focuses on the work of three poets who found their home in the British Isles: MacLeod, Yeats, and O'Sullivan - all early contemporary Pagans of centuries past who found their place in the world through their moving spiritual poetry. Tinker guides us through some of their poems that we can use as a guide for deeper connection via the tool of pathworking - the ability to traverse the inner realms.

Through this book, I found myself intrigued by classical poetry in ways I never have before. The ways in which Tinker weaves the work into the goal of deeper self-knowledge and spiritual revelation is revolutionary. I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to ignite the flames of the poet within. This is a book for all those who wish to look to the great creative works of the past in the hope for greater connection to the present self.

Poetry Between the Worlds
By Anemone
An excellent and practical guide to Celtic pathwork, ie meditation and interaction with the Fey. Yeats is one of my favorite poets. Use of his poems in this volume is a big plus for me. I have always believed that we are meant to speak directly with the spirits. Fiona Tinker does too. She blends literature and spirituality as they are meant to be. I highly recommend this book and will use it in my classes.

The Boys of Boise: Furor, Vice and Folly in an American City (Columbia Northwest Classics), by Gerassi

"Written in 1965 about a same-sex sexual scandal that occurred in 1955 in Boise, Idaho, John Gerassi’s classic study depicts both middle America’s traditional response to homosexuality and an era in the country’s history before the modern gay rights movement really got underway. Because much of what Gerassi wrote about persists in today’s struggles over gay and lesbian issues, his book still has much to tell us about how contemporary society reacts to, and misunderstands, homosexuality."―Peter Boag

On the morning of November 2, 1955, the people of Boise, Idaho, were stunned by a screaming headline in the Idaho Daily Statesman, THREE BOISE MEN ADMIT SEX CHARGES. Time magazine picked up the story, reporting that a "homosexual underworld" had long operated in Idaho’s staid capital city. The Statesman led the hysteria that resulted in dozens of arrests―including some highly placed members of the community―and sentences ranging from probation to life imprisonment.

Peter Boag’s Foreword places the book in historical perspective, summarizing the popular psychological theories and legal conceptions that helped to shape Gerassi’s research. He discusses advances in Idaho’s public approach to homosexuality and ways in which the provincialism chronicled by Gerassi persists to this day.

An Alternative Lifestyler's Must Read Book
By Jon Watt
The Boys of Boise is one of those books that anyone interested in understanding the issues besetting those living an alternative lifestyle must read.
John Gerassi writes an editorial history of a series of politically motivated arrests and harrassments of those in the homosexual community in Boise, Idaho in 1955. Gerassi writes from a mid-1960s perspective in the midst of the sexual revolution looking back on a different perspective when homosexuality was even less accepted than it was in the 1960s.
The book explores several issues as they impacted a prosecution of a given portion of the homosexual population: community politics, the input and influence of a religous community (in Boise - the LDS), the role of the popular local press, a grab for power by those outside the main community power structure, the role of law enforcement and the courts.
Why is this book a must read for understanding issues facing those living alternative lifestyles today? The events covered could happen in any community today - to those who are exploring poly relationships, BDSM, and Gor - as well as to those who continue to simply live within the Gay community. There are laws on our books in each state and locale that could be discriminatively enforced to bring problems to individuals or groups - in violation of protections they believe they have under the Bill of Rights.
The only possible negative in the book - and for some it is not a negative - is the amount of space devoted to reproducing the entirety of court dialogs and certain other primary sources. While I personally enjoyed having the sources there - other historians would prefer they be relegated to either appendices or simply referenced and summarized. It should be noted that when Gerassi wrote this book - he was a reporter/editor for a news periodical rather than a university professor.
The book definitely belongs in the library of scholars devoted to Urban studies, gay studies, the sociology of alternative lifestyles and the like.

Classic American journalism
By Timothy Hulsey
From 1955 to 1957, Boise, Idaho, was caught in the grip of a full-blown Gay panic that made national headlines and gave Idaho's judicial system a black eye. This study of the panic, published in 1965, is both of its time and decades ahead of it. Gerassi brilliantly dissects the (chiefly economic) motives of people involved in promoting and prosecuting the scandal. He also displays a sharp eye for character and incidental detail.

_The Boys of Boise_ is a must-read for anyone with an interest in GLBT history and a classic piece of investigative journalism in its own right. (Neil Miller covers a similar scandal in Sioux City, IA, with the somewhat inferior _Sex Crime Panic_.)

A great read and an enduring work of journalism for many reasons
By Allen Smalling
Seemingly out of nowhere, in the late fall of 1955, Page One headlines in Boise, Idaho's afternoon newspaper screamed about three men arrested for molesting [male] minors, and the paper shrilled even louder a little later in an inflammatory editorial that implied a large homosexual menace. It paper urged the populace to demand action--although it was a little vague on exactly what kind of action. No one could have predicted the enormity of what followed. Happily for us, ten years later, in 1965, a TIME magazine reporter, John Gerassi, went to Boise and meticulously researched the background, history and fallout of that astonishing scandal. Ordinarily a 45-year-old book based on a 55-year-old scandal, with some quoted experts relying on psychoanalytic theory discredited today, would not be considered priority reading. But Gerassi's book, THE BOYS OF BOISE, while quite illuminating, is also intense and fascinating, and in this reviewer's opinion deserves to be considered a key work of American journalism. Here are some reasons why, with only a sampling of relevant examples and anecdotes:

Witch Hunt and Hysteria: The police started arresting men right and left. Boise and its suburbs went into a virtual lockdown of fear and paranoia. At the height of the hysteria, family men were afraid to ask how the high-school football team was doing, and all-male poker games were cancelled unless a tolerant woman could be found to drink and smoke along with the guys. (Even so, complained one professional, it cut way down on the swearing so the poker sessions weren't nearly as much fun.) In one instance, bizarre today but sadly common at the time, a bachelor teacher received a phone call during breakfast from a friend warning him that police were on the prowl. The young man immediately got up, got packed and got out, relocating to another state, leaving his job behind and his breakfast on the table. In retrospect, he probably did the sensible thing.

Morals, Sexology, and Ethics: Though a churchgoing community, Boise was about evenly divided between Mormons and other believers who kept out of each other's way socially. When half the middle class of a big town/small city doesn't know the other half, it makes gossip, speculation and rumor spread, since people tend to demonize those of whom they know least. Sexually speaking, Boise, though a little isolated, was not an atypical blue-collar town of its size. Following Kinsey and the experts Gerassi interviewed, "unnatural acts" and "crimes against nature" under the broadly worded law went on quite naturally and by nice, putatively law-abiding citizens. (Not to mention unlawfulness like playing poker for stakes, wink, or operating an unlicensed bar in the home.) Like any community, Boise had its share of homosexual horseplay among adolescents, circle-jerks and experimental fooling around. This may account for the fact that the male adults of Boise, while not exactly tolerant, were less likely to demand action on the issue or pass along rumors to the cops as were the women. Perhaps the men knew how unrealistic it was to maintain anything other than an image of purity in most boys of sixteen or seventeen.

Investigation: What looked like vigilant law enforcement was really the police wing of an attempted (small spoiler**) "putsch" between opposing factions of city government and administration. And, as has happened in other locales, when the dragnet was spread wide, the police started roping in upper-middle-class miscreants with access to media and lawyers as well as the more stereotypical "trash" and ne'er-do-wells. Having angered a couple of citizens with clout, arrests made during raid or entrapment schemes declined. But it was able to foster horror even before an arrest might be made.

Interrogation: The focus shifted from forensic investigation to interrogation in a house near downtown that always kept its shades pulled down. Like any community its size, Boise had its share of cash-strapped sixteen- and seventeen-years olds, some of whom weren't above the occasional hustle (or "gay for pay"), especially if he was the oral "pitcher." One police questioner in particular was skilled in making closeted gay man think of blackmail without actually saying so; and the seediest hustler could come across as a naïve teen after he spoke unknowingly into tape recorder and named names of adults. The little Jesuitries of broadly worded morals laws were exploited to the hilt; it might become crucial whether it was the 32-year-old or the 17-year-old who first mentioned oral sex but not necessarily vital whether any sex took place.

Citizenship: Immense harm to civil liberties ensued, as well as damage to the innocent, guilty or those stuck in between. Eleven years before Miranda, there were absolutely no Miranda-type rights offered or assured; and those who talked did so with a constantly-running tape recorder in the room. More than a few teens and young men fell for the line that the cops needed to set the record straight, and then unwittingly ratted out a friend or fleeting sex partner. Adults were frankly encouraged to name names under promise (seldom realized) of lenient treatment. It was indeed a kind of McCarthyism gone home, not in the least part because the lead interrogator, a man named Fairchild, had been brought in from the outside and was skilled in the ways of routing gay men and lesbians out of the armed forces, a transferable skill he exercised with almost Stalinist impunity in the Boise of 1955.

The cases finally settled on as top priority for prosecution and full jury trials involved oral sex (anal was rarely on the menu), but who was "Top" and who "Bottom" could be obscured if that might have hurt the juror's opinion of the "innocent" or "duped" one, usually a teen. In cases where the sex was clearly intentional and no gay-for-pay or prostitution took place, questioning could hinge on whether an out-of-towner offered a young man a lift or bought him a Coke. If the adult were a nobody passing through town, interrogation would take one tack; if he were an upright citizen it might take another. At the height of the terror, a young man and former Boisean living in California, the late Mel Dir, was extradited from San Francisco back to Boise (breaking Lord-knows-how-many Amendments to the U.S. Constitution) to face prosecution for participating in an act of "oral sodomy" when he was still living in Boise and under eighteen. And he went to trial.

Psychiatry and Psychology, 1965: It's quite natural to feel irritated at times in this book, when expert opinion about (male) homosexuality is surveyed and most people advised not prison (as under Idaho law), but instead acceptance and "adjustment" -- and the slim but possible hope for a "cure" -- to heterosexuality. And these were the liberals! If any licensed professional cops that attitude today, report him or her -- they're not keeping up with their field. It's important to keep in mind that Gerassi researched and wrote THE BOYS OF BOISE in 1965, four years before the landmark Stonewall riots and six years before the IPA dropped its definition of constituent homosexuality as a neurosis. It's like seeing an African-American housemaid portrayed in an old "Tom and Jerry" cartoon. You don't have to like it, but you should consider it the product of a less enlightened time. And not prejudge the book because of that, but instead consider how far gay men and lesbians have come in the intervening years. Gerassi's book was almost incredibly enlightened for its time, coming from a professional from TIME magazine with no axe to grind and no cause to apologize for. THE BOYS OF BOISE went paperback and became a hit paperback-rack bestseller in 1967.

I feel obliged to point out that Boise was not then, nor is it now, "Sin City USA." What triggered the ususual hysteria on the part of the 1955-57 investigation was probably private impetus and a compliant newspaper sounding an alarm over [largely nonexistent] moral evils. But Boise did not achieve what we'd today call "closure." Did karma bite back? The concentrated and quasi-Stalinistic aspect of the scandal helped spur John Gerassi to research and write THE BOYS OF BOISE. Then the book became a paperback bestseller in 1967. Just two years ago a summary-and-update documentary about the scandal, THE FALL OF '55, narrated by Claudia Weathermon, was released and is still available in DVD-R. (See reviews.)

There are so many more things I'd like to relate, such as manipulation of the press, the role of women in this affair, the shadowy "Queen" who was behind it all, which of these persons suffered career damage, or whether the transplanted Californian had to go to jail - but at this point I urge you to buy and read THE BOYS OF BOISE. We are fortunate to have it in an affordable trade paperback, and with generous typeface and margins.

At the very same time, two similarly paranoid roundups of local gay men took place in Sioux City, Iowa. That sad affair and its resolution is well documented by historian Neil Miller in his SEX-CRIME PANIC (Alyson Pubs., 2002).

everything a specialist needs
By A Customer
This is a laboratory manual aimed at people who work on Xenopus development in, well, laboratories. If you are a herpetologist or general frog enthusiast this book is not for you. As far as adult frogs go, Xenopus are actually quite ugly. However, if you work with their beautiful embryos and need to know how to do wholemount in situ hybridization, mark dorsal blastopore lips, dejelly embryos, or dozens of other technical processes- this book is exactly what you need. The experts who designed and optimized these various protocols give step by step instructions on how to perform procedures in your own lab, list reagents and suppliers, provide chemical safety information, and more.
Hardly a week goes by without us referring to this book in my lab.

The Waning of the Renaissance, 1550-1640, by Professor William J. Bouwsma, William J. Bouwsma

Eminent historian William J. Bouwsma here examines the conventional view of the European Renaissance as the root and foundation of modern culture, arguing instead that while it had a beginning and a climax, the Renaissance also had an ending. Bouwsma examines closely the waning of the Renaissance culture of freedom and creativity, and he offers an interpretation of the place of the Renaissance in modern culture. William J. Bouwsma was Sather Professor of History at the University of California, Berkeley.

"Bouwsma argues elegantly that the liberation accompanying the Renaissance engendered an intellectual reaction characterized by pessimism, doubt, and anxiety. By placing the intellectual history of the Renaissance in the context of a continuing struggle between freedom and order, Bouwsma fundamentally challenges a progressive interpretation of Western history." -- Atlantic Monthly, "The Best Books of 2001."

"Bouwsma produces a masterful portrait of an era, one deserving to become as canonical as Huizinga; it will be increasingly difficult to teach or discuss the 16th century without it." -- Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Bacon and Montaigne Omelette
By Thomas J. Burns
It is William Bouwsma's thesis that the Renaissance was not the budding spring of the modern age, but an organic era with a beginning and an end. Curiously, the forces given birth at the beginning of the era proved to be so frightening that the Renaissance players rushed to euthanize them. The Renaissance did not wane so much as it was dismantled, like an errant atomic bomb, by scientists overawed by their invention.
Bouwsma examines sixteenth century European thought in piecemeal-philosophy, theology, politics, science, literature, the theater-and with Newtonian precision describes how the adventuresome Renaissance spirit smashed molds of dated thinking and psychological ordering. Then, in reaction to its own recklessness, the Renaissance mind either retreated to old certainties rehabilitated or domesticated its inventions into a more tranquil conventionality.
Historical essays of this sort can make for delightful reading. Boorstin's "The Discoverers," for example, captures both the specificity and the poetry of scientific history. Bouwsma, unfortunately, errs on the side of specificity. The flow of the work reminds one of a lengthy receiving line where every great thinker gets a handshake and a bon mot, but soon it is time to move on to the next guest. This is not to say that some of the guests don't mingle excessively. The author has a warm spot in his heart for Shakespeare, Sarpi, Jonson, Hobbes, Hooker, Galileo, and in particular Bacon and Montaigne, who pop up dozens of times in the narrative. Regrettably, "pop up" is exactly what they do, to provide proof texts and anecdotal spicing. The reader who is not intimately familiar with Bacon, for example, will not get a significant taste of his thought.
This is most unfortunate, because I believe Bouwsma has at least scratched the surface of an interesting concept: the Renaissance as psychological event. From our vantage point the Renaissance looms as an unmitigated liberation. Bouwsma, on the other hand, implies that for every man who felt liberated, another felt terrified. The great irony is that frequently these were one and the same man, that few intellectuals were so dense as not to feel some fear at the rending of the medieval synthesis. There is no shortage of great Renaissance men in this work, but only a glimmer of their ambiguity.

A layman's reaction to a splendid but dense Book
By Richard Nunez
This book is by no means easy to read. But a little persistence pays off handsomely. True enough one gets the impression that the author's own conclusions gets in the way of a more objective explication. Albeit the subject matter is dense as he tackles many very different dimensions of the Renaissance or rather the development of the Renaissance after its clear enough upwelling in the 15th Century in Italy then Europe. But the many strands are pinpointed and it is up to the reader somewhat to uphold or downplay this or that 'tendency'. Also he seems to rely on Hooker rather a lot but I cannot myself comment on the necessity or otherwise of that reliance. Personally I feel there has been too much specialization and therefore loss of appreciation of the broad movements and spectacular pitfalls in history but on the other hand it is not at all easy to characterize an Age without getting sufficient information of sufficient reliability as would require a fairly in-depth study. Bouwsma whets the appetite by the fairly numerous strands he delineates if only to rouse healthy and exciting skepticism.....

hapters consider the yearning for order
By Midwest Book Review
Historians have viewed Western cultural achievement as a singular progression; William Bouwsma's Waning Of The Renaissance rethinks the view, arguing that the period from 1550-1640 was a phase of complex ambivalence which stimulated cultural change. Chapters consider the yearning for order, social and political discontents of the times, and the process of change.

PALLADIO, THE VILLA AND THE LANDSCAPE, by Gerrit Smienk, Johannes Niemeijer

Andrea Palladio is universally regarded as one of the most important architects of the Re-naissance. He was the first ""professional architect"" and was strongly influenced by Greek and Roman architecture, particularly by Vitruvius. His treatise ""Quattro libri dellarchitettura"" also earned him worldwide recognition. Palladios villas meanwhile are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. This book documents and analyzes ten of Palladios eighteen surviving villas specifically in terms of their relationship with their natural surroundings; their influence on those surroundings is investigated as well. The selected villas constitute a representative cross section of Palladios wide-ranging output. The landscape formations of Veneto, where these villas are located, may be divided into three types: plains surrounded by mountains, arid plains, and marshland. Gerrit Smienk is a landscape architect with many years teaching experience at the TU Delft and the Berlage Institute, Rotterdam, and is a recognized expert on the Italian Renaissance. Palladio in Place
By SAA3
Like no other book that I've read on the work of the Italian architect Andrea Palladio, this brilliant book discusses his buildings in relation to their place in the Veneto landscape. With the assistance of a host of students at the Faculty of Architecture at the TU Delft, and various architects and their assistants, and aerial photographers, and the owners and managers of the villas they examined, Gerrit Smienk and Johannes Niemeijer have produced a thoughtful, readable, and elegantly illustrated piece of analytical research that should find its way into the bookshelves of serious architects and landscape architects everywhere. In choosing to limit their focus to only ten of Palladio's well-known agricultural villas, Smienk and Neimeijer nevertheless cover a world of ground. The chapter headings alone suggest the scope of their undertaking: The Re-creation of the Venetian Terraferma, Ten Selected Villas, The Agricultural Villa as Model Farm, The Villa in a Production Landscape. But it is in the drawings and photographs that the book sings: photographs from the air and from the ground and within the buildings and in the gardens, site diagrams and more detailed site plans, exploded axonometrics, building plans, elevations and cross-sections, original material and carefully constructed modern drawings---each building within its unique setting is examined in such detail that the reader feels himself there at the scene, in the hands of an inspired and expert interpreter. If you have any interest at all in the broader aspects of the architecture of Andrea Palladio, or in the question of how it is that, in the final analysis, all good buildings draw their abiding character from the unique quality of their settings, then this is a book you will not wish to be without. As for me, I'm headed off to the Veneto as soon as spring rolls around!

Now re-released as the Chambers Dictionary of Etymology
By A Customer
This is the conclusion of an amazing 20 year project. The result is one of the best etymological references available today (and IMHO, certainly better organized and laid out than the Oxford E.D.). While the Oxford emphasizes British sources, the Barnhart's focus is decisively American. (So you should really get both.) LONG OUT OF PRINT - here's the good news, it has been re-released (1999) and is now available as the Chambers Dictionary of Etymology, and at half the price the price of the U.S. Edition! Highly recommended.

Indispensible for word lovers - accept no substitute
By DT
If you are the type of person who reads with a dictionary within reach, you will find this resource indispensable. There is nothing like it other than the OECD, and this is much more user friendly. I am glad to see it has been republished by a different publisher, as I have complained about the very disappointing abridged version of this work published by this publisher. Don't buy that. It is no smaller, just has many fewer and shorted entries.

aahhhhh what!
By My day off
some of the words that I looked for were not, and did not have a solid definition; example on some of the defined history of the words would use worlds like "may or may not, possibly, perhaps" etc... It's almost as if the writer of this book was guessing on some words. This book would be good for school but not for professional use.

Emmanuel's Dream: The True Story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, by Laurie Ann Thompson

Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah's inspiring true story—which was turned into a film, Emmanuel's Gift, narrated by Oprah Winfrey—is nothing short of remarkable.

Born in Ghana, West Africa, with one deformed leg, he was dismissed by most people—but not by his mother, who taught him to reach for his dreams. As a boy, Emmanuel hopped to school more than two miles each way, learned to play soccer, left home at age thirteen to provide for his family, and, eventually, became a cyclist. He rode an astonishing four hundred miles across Ghana in 2001, spreading his powerful message: disability is not inability. Today, Emmanuel continues to work on behalf of the disabled.

Thompson's lyrical prose and Qualls's bold collage illustrations offer a powerful celebration of triumphing over adversity.

Includes an author's note with more information about Emmanuel's charity.

From School Library Journal
K-Gr 2—This powerful and winning picture book tells the story of a young man overcoming the odds. Born in Ghana with a deformed left leg, Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah experienced stigma as a result of his disability: his father abandoned the family, and many assumed that the boy would be little more than a burden. However, with the encouragement of his mother, Yeboah refused to give up, hopping to school (instead of walking) and even learning to play soccer and cycle, despite receiving no extra help or accommodations. Thompson's lucidly written text explains how Yeboah cycled 400 miles in 2001 to raise awareness, forever changing how Ghanaians perceived those with disabilities. The narrative is simply and clearly written, and the illustrations are skillfully rendered in charmingly emotive ink and watercolor collages. A brief author's note explains how Yeboah inspired legislation upholding equal rights for the disabled and how he continues to make strides, working with organizations that provide wheelchairs to those who need them and setting up a scholarship fund for children with disabilities. VERDICT This uplifting account will resonate with readers and supplement global and cultural studies. A triumph.—Kathryn Diman, Bass Harbor Memorial Library, Bernard, ME

An inspiring story for all ages
    By M. Tanenbaum
This inspiring picture book by author Laurie Ann Thompson tells the moving true story of Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah, a young man born with a severe disability in rural Ghana who nonetheless bicycled across the entire country, raising awareness for disabled people throughout Africa and around the world. The book opens with a touching tableau--a beautiful baby boy has been born, but with only one strong leg. We can see the despair in the father's posture and the fear in the mother's eyes as she looks at the baby's father. Disabled children in Ghana were not only considered worthless-they were considered a curse, and the baby's father soon abandons the family. The mother's hope is seen in her naming the baby "Emmanuel," which means "God is with us." Emmanuel's mother refuses to allow her child to become a beggar, as was the custom for disabled people in Ghana; instead she helps him to become self-sufficient, hopping to school, two miles each way. When his classmates scorned him, he saves money to buy something no one in the school had--a real soccer ball, and earns their respect by learning to play on just one leg. When his mother falls ill, Emmanuel moves to the big city to earn money to support his family. Sadly, his mother dies, but he honors her memory by dreaming up a way to show that disabled people could do anything--a bike ride around his country--nearly 400 miles. Support for what others deemed an impossible project came all the way from America, along with the equipment he needed. We see Emmanuel riding across the country, surrounded people cheering, including disabled countrymen. Thompson concludes this inspiring story as follows: "He completed his astounding journey...in just ten days. But Emmanuel's success goes even further than that. He proved that one leg is enough to do great things--and one person is enough to change the world."

In her first picture book, author Laurie Ann Thompson admirably succeeds in her mission of teaching children about social justice issues, a campaign she began in her young adult nonfiction book, Be a Changemaker, a how-to book for young social entrepreneurs. Thompson's tale is enhanced with mixed media illustrations by award-winning children's illustrator Sean Qualls (Before John Was a Jazz Giant and Skit-Scat Raggedy Cat among others). He uses a "primitive" style of illustration, relying on collage and paint to convey the emotion of Emmanuel's story.

An author's note explains that Emmanuel has continued to achieve great things, competing in major athletic events, carrying the Olympic torch, and starring in a documentary about his life, Emmanuel's Gift, which I will be putting on my Netflix queue. He continues to work to help disabled people, particularly in Ghana, realize their full potential.

This is a wonderful book to share with elementary school children; for older children it can be paired with viewing the documentary.

A wonderful story for children and adults alike
    By Leah Silver
Having been a Special Education Teacher for the past 20+ years and working with children with many differing abilities, both cognitive and physical, Emmanuel's Dream really spoke to me. Laurie Thompson's ability to tell Emanuel's story by showing strength of character and perseverance is truly inspirational. A must read! A wonderful story for children and adults alike.

    Inspiring
    By Janet Hamilton
Summary: “In this world, we are not perfect. We can only do our best,” says Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah. When Emmanuel was born, his right leg was deformed. Growing up in Ghana, he learned to use his left leg well enough that he could hop the two miles to school, play soccer on crutches, and ride a bike. His mother was his biggest supporter, and when she died, her final words to him were, “Don’t give up.” Emmanuel used these words to inspire himself to pursuit his dream…riding a bicycle from one end of Ghana to the other. Wearing a shirt reading “The Pozo” (meaning “the disabled person”), he fulfilled his dream of riding over 400 miles in just one day. He’s continued to raise awareness about the disabled in his country, and was instrumental in the 2006 passage of the Ghanaian Persons With Disabilities Act. Grades 1-6.

Pros: An inspiring read for anyone to pursue their dreams.

Cons: Four miles of hopping a day.
