Worth Every Penny And More

First of all, anyone who tells you the info in this book about the way women signal men isn't valid must have very little or even no experience with them. I've seen these same signals of interest over and over and over again. I've used this info in my life to pick-up girls and have sat in a bar and seen women give them to other men too (more often than not dude has no clue).

For example, I'm sitting next to a hardbody at the bar with her back turned. I'm facing slightly away from her watching the sports screen and notice she starts to toss her hair on and off a few times. She isn't looking at me so I'm patient and keep enjoying my meal. She says to her friend, "That chicken sure looks good"(what I was eating). So I say, "Gotta keep it healthy" to her and things went really great from there.

Just read this book and go out to your favorite bar or club and people watch the chicks in there for a while. You'll see this stuff used by them _constantly_ to signal interest. Now, that doesn't mean you can't just "assume attraction" and cold approach her without a body language signal if you want (I sometimes do). Just know that your chance of success is higher when she signals interest first.

And remember, it's called "game" for a reason....be sure to have fun first and foremost.

OVER-HYPED PSYCHOBABBLE THAT'S ALL FILLER, NO THRILLER...

... I was really looking forward to reading this book, but page after page, it was nothing more than hot air promising to enlighten the reader on this, that and the other thing but never delivering the goods on how to actually score - all it was were her personal theories bolstered by study after study of "findings" (some of these studies involving experiments with rodents, of all things)... however, most of those findings are hardly conclusive when you take into account the most critical factor of all - what women say and what they actually do are often in conflict (the author admits this herself on page 106).

For instance, take the typical gal who bemoans the lack of decent single guys as she describes her ideal man as practically being the nerd-next-door, and yet she'll only throw herself at every "bad boy" that crosses her path. One can only conclude that women are attracted to nice guys in theory only; they're ultimately ruled by their emotions and have no control over who turns them on, no matter how they may try to intellectualize what kind of guy they claim to be attracted to.

More than anything, women have very strong survival instincts and need to feel financially secure. That mindset usually leads them right to the straight-laced, button-down type with favourable income-earning potential who can fulfill that need (usually the guy she'll marry), while being sexually attracted to an entirely different type of guy altogether (the dude that rocks her world who she'll carry on an affair with).

How do I know this? Because at least 25% of the women I meet are married (or otherwise attached) and, usually after a few drinks and a couple of frisky slow dances, they'll make it very clear to me in no uncertain terms that they're in the market for a torrid affair, no strings attached, would I be interested? The reasons vary, but usually it's because they're not physically and/or sexually attracted to their mates and, in many cases, apparently never have been.

After reading so many books on the subject of picking up women (from both male and female authors), I'm now 100% convinced that your best advice will come from guys who know from experience what it takes to score. A female can't teach you how to pick her up and close the deal because:

1) every woman's level of resistance is different - some are easy to pick up, others are next to impossible;

2) every woman's concept of male beauty and appealing characteristics varies from one to the next;

3) because they're always mindful of their reputation among their social peers, many women believe that the only way they can be picked up for a one-night stand is if they have an overwhelming physical attraction to you in the first place or are otherwise flat-out drunk - most gals are confident that their "defense shield" is impenetrable and don't take into account the smooth-talking joe with all the right moves who can charm them into the sack;

4) you can't teach "chemistry" - either it's there or it isn't, and it can only be gauged in face-to-face situations;

5) what women THINK they want in theory and what they actually find themselves attracted to in real life are, more often than not, nothing alike.

As for the body language stuff? Puh-leeze. Even the average frustrated chump would be able to decipher 90% of these so-called "undercover sex signals" (fluffing her hair? licking her lips? sticking out her chest? hello, McFly! is anyone home?).

Reading this book was like listening to someone build up an elaborate joke but forgetting what the punch line was - it just didn't deliver.

Bottom line: don't bother with books about how to pick up women written by women, because most of the time, they don't even know what they really want in the first place. They might scorn the handsome, muscular ladies' man in theory, but when they're feeling sexy and want to get their freak on, guess who they'll throw themselves at?

How can we tell women are interested? Are women constantly giving us signals that we are just not picking up on, or that some men are picking up on, and acting on successfully?

Well, when it comes to body language, most men are oblivious to about 95% of the buying signals that women are giving out, or misinterpreting them.

There are photographs throughout of women demonstrating the various signals, which are supported by science.

Imagine you're walking into a bar, you see a woman, she holds eye contact for several moments then looks away and down. Is she interested? How do you respond? Subtleties in your response make or break the situation.

Experts say only 7% of communication is verbal, 38% is tonality, and 55% is body language. Which is better to know, the 7% or the 55%?

When you are talking to a woman, should you lead by turning your body towards her, or let her lead by moving her body towards you? If you don't know the answer, you need this book.

Leil understands the way men think, and speaks to the male point of view, and eerily at times seems to know what we are thinking.

Perhaps, the single most interesting and persuasive story for me concerns her aesthetically challenged friend Dan the dentist, a ladies man. Dan's insights persuaded me that being able to identify and interpret these signals will vastly improve your success with women. The idea that men go to a bar and obsess about the unattainable woman, while oblivious to signs of interest from other women, rings true, and fine tuning your perceptions will totally change your success.

Some of the signals that women give are unconscious, particularly when it comes to rapport. Your ability to identify these signals as clear indicators of interest are a roadmap to your eventual success.

Lots of Stephen King fans feel that his horror novels are dwarfed by what they consider his masterpiece, the genre-bending Dark Tower books. They're a little like the sprawling epics of J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert Jordan, and George Lucas, but then again, they're really like nothing else in this world (or King's).

This set collects the first three. The Gunslinger introduces the hero Roland, who must reach the Dark Tower in order to save his universe, Mid-World. There are passageways between our world and Mid-World, and a New York City boy named Jake gets shoved in front of a car by Jack Mort ("death"), is killed, and finds himself alive in Roland's world. He becomes Roland's surrogate son.

In book 2, The Drawing of the Three, Roland is attacked by marvelous, poisonous "lobstrosities" and enters our world for help. He takes heroin addict Eddie Dean from 1987 New York and Odetta Holmes from 1964 New York as his team. In a powerful time-tripping scene, Roland confronts Jack Mort and actually changes Jake's Earth history, which has heady implications for Roland's world.

In The Waste Lands, book 3, Roland and company get ensnared in a civil war in the urban waste of Lud, acquire a delightful talking pet named Oy the Bumbler, and find themselves captives of a psychotic train called Blaine the Mono.

A mixed bag of fruits

It's tough to rate this book. On one end, you get alot of web technologies in one package: xhtml, javascript, xml, asp.net, php, python, sql, etc, etc. On the other end, however, some sections are severely lacking. The PHP section is very short and topics such as PHP classes aren't even mentioned. The main problem with this book is that it's trying to create something that is just too ambitious. There are many commands, for every scripting language I mentioned above, that are missing. IMHO, I think the Deitels are good authors. Their C++ series is phenomenal and it really taught me how to program in C++. This book, while it does contain the great writing style of Deitels, is unfortunately incomplete in too many aspects.

If you want to learn a scripting language, then it would be a good idea to purchase a book which focuses on that language alone and not 10,000 others at once.

Great all-in-one, but too Microsoft-centric

This book overall is the best general introduction to website development technologies that I've found. I'm coming from the perspective of a professor who needed to teach HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and any server-side scripting language to my students. After deciding to use PHP, I loked for several appropriate books, and I did find numerous good options, but at the very most, any given book would only cover two of the technologies I needed. Thus, I would end up with at least three or four books that had way more than necessary and would cost up to $200 for one course.

Eventually I discovered Deitel's all-in-wonder, and found an excellent textbook that includes every possible Web technology that I might consider in one reasonably priced book. It has at least one introductory chapter on every technology. Note that everything in the book is simply introductory--very appropriate for a first-level course. It serves as a life-time reference that helps a student or Web developer enter into any given Web technology in a tutorial format. However, to get more advanced, the developer will absolutely have to find a dedicated book on the technology of interest--this book is not for advanced topics; it just gets you in the door--but productively so!

Specifically, the book has at least one full introductory chapter (sometimes two) on: XHTML, CSS, Flash, Dreamweaver, XML, ASP.NET, Perl, PHP, and Coldfusion. It has 10 full chapters on JavaScript that fully teach a non-programmer from scratch how to program (hence the title of the book)--however, I have serious disagreement with their Microsoft-centric approach, as I mention below. The book also has a chapter each on web graphics, web servers, and databases.

In addition, the book includes a CD with complete PDF chapters on VBScript, ASP (not .NET), Python, JSP, and lots more. The chapters are clear, and the authors make a good selection of the most important and useful functions and features, that give students a solid base to get on their feet web programming.

However, the book has one very serious systematic flaw: The writers only used Internet Explorer and completely ignored compatibility with other browsers. I strongly emphasize to my students programming for Web standards, and this is very difficult to do with this book--in fact, it is impossible the way they teach JavaScript. Many of their code examples simply will not work with browsers that follow W3C standards such as Firefox and Opera. I eventually had to give up on teaching students work-arounds for the book's code, and just gave in to Microsoft. Obviously, this is not an acceptable compromise for some people, so this book might be disqualified for this one reason alone. However, I find the book extremely valuable nonetheless--for this reason the book does not deserve five stars.

For my purposes, it is the best choice available, and if not for its exclusive focus on Microsoft Internet Explorer, it would be a near-perfect introductory book on every significant web technology.

Recently there have been a wealth of good books published on Bayesian methods and the Markov chain Monte Carlo approach to its implementation. For the beginner Berry's introductory book is a good place to start.
Bernardo and Smith are experts in the field who have participated in many of the Bayesian conferences held in Valencia and much of that lterature is contained in this book. They originally wrote the book in 1993 (with a publication date of January 1994). This paperback edition is not a revision but rather a reprinting with corrections. The original hardcover edition was very expensive and this paperback edition makes the text more affordable and should greatly expand the list of Bayesian specialists and other statisticians and practitioners that read it.

The authors intent was to extend the classical work of Bruno deFinetti who popularized the Bayesian approach with his two classic probability books. One of the authors was involved in translating deFinetti's books into English and they are both well familiar with it. In this book they offer an extension to the area of statistical inference.

The beauty of deFinetti is the logical and systematic nature of the presentation but he did not extend this to statistical practice. These authors maintain the systematic approach and review the probability axioms but then go on to cover statistical modelling including how models are approached through concepts of exchangeability, invariance, sufficency and partial exchangeability. The chapter on inference covers the Bayesian paradigm, the use of conjugate families, asymptotic methods, multiparameter problems and the thorny issues with nuisance parameters. It also includes a number of methods of numerical approximation including Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods.

The authors deliberately left the coverage of computational methods brief as they planned a second volume to cover it in detail. But in the preface to the new paperback edition they admit that they have abandon this plan due to the evolution of MCMC methods as the dominant numerical approach and the wealth of new texts that adequately cover the topic.

I suggest that this text is the new bible for Bayesian statistics because I think it replaces the old bibles, Lindley's two volumes (some may argue for Savage's book). This is fitting as both authors attest to being students and disciples of Dennis Lindley. The reason I think it is worthy of bible status is because it covers the foundations in systematic detail, is current and very complete. The text contains references from 1763 (Bayes' original treatise) to 1993 covering an incredible 66 pages of the text. With 20 plus references per page that means over 1320 references!

This is an intermediate level text that requires advanced calculus but not measure theory. Emphasis is on concepts and not mathematical proofs. The authors also provide an overview of the non-Bayesian forms of statistical inference in Appendix B. The authors confront the controversial issues in each chapter. Bayesian statistical methods are treated in the framework of decision theory and ideas from information theory take on a central role.

The Standard First Text To Begin Studying Bayesian Methods

This is an extremely nice introduction to Bayesian statistical methods. It takes you from the very basics - even who Thomas Bayes was (who happens to be buried in Bunhill Fields cemetery in London with William Blake (Songs of Innocence and Experience, Jerusalem), Daniel Defoe (Robinson Crusoe), John Bunyan (Pilgrim's Progress)).
Its chapters are divided into sections forming an Introduction, Foundations, Generalizations, Modeling, Inference, and Remodeling. There is also a section summarizing the basic formulae and alternative non-Bayesian approaches. A rich reference list, subject index, and author index are also provided.
If you are familiar with the math of undergraduate statistics you should not have a problem with the math notation in this book. This really is the standard text you find on most shelves of folks who are familiar with this subject. There are many books to read beyond this one, but this is a fine place to start.

A complete introduction to classical Bayesian analysis

[1] It is an excellent book on the classical Bayesian theory. The first author is a famous mathematician, who held several international conferences on Bayesian statistics.

[2] Similar to Berger's book, it is also built on Statistical Decision Theory. In my opinion, Berger's is a little better.

[3] The part of Bayesian foundation is heavy, maybe a topos today. But in the bookshelf, we indeed need such work.

[4] Think about the thickness of the bibliography --- the reference is awesome!

[5] The history of Bayesian statistics is well overviewed.

[6] To learn more about the Bayesian computation, you need some complement books, such as Liu's, Tanner's, Gelman's, etc.

About the Author
Gennady Ermak was born and raised in the former Soviet Union. He is the acclaimed author of 45 scholarly articles and the book "Emerging Medical Technologies". For many years, he conducted research at the University of Southern California. Upon realizing the extent to which the idea of communism is misunderstood in contemporary society, he stopped his research career in order to write his groundbreaking book addressing this misunderstanding. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California.

Remarkable book. It shows that all those new fancy ...

Remarkable book. It shows that all those new fancy terms, such as trekonomics and post-capitalism, mean nothing but communism. The author performed incredible job reviewing Marxism, philosophy of communism, its practice as well as history over the past two thousands of years. The book provides a clear and surprisingly optimistic review on China. Also, it is very balanced and reconciliatory. It does not take side of either pro-communists or pro-capitalists. It actually suggests that pro-communists should help capitalists in their development of economy … so that communism can arise sooner.

Clear, Compelling, and Well-Researched Book about Communism & Socialism

I found this book to be extremely well-researched, well-organized, and a very interesting read. The author does a nice job of addressing historical socioeconomic considerations, and offers an original but well-founded perspective on the topic. I appreciated the book's capacity for holding opposing viewpoints in tension, and I think it presents a nice compass toward future developments oriented against the backdrop of the past.

Overall, a compelling and worthwhile read.

Beware of those 1-star ratings

Clearly, they are done by reviewers who did not read the book. Actually, two of them admit that they did not read it, but just got upset about Facebook. The other one (electroman) goes on and on about automation while the book does not even mention it. Why people do this? Unfortunately, Amazon allows this vandalism: as long as you spent at least $50 (shoes or lotion), it allows to review anything else. I have the book, and it was a good read. The book is special. It penetrates the very core of humanity. I see the world through different lens now.
