Lots of helpful info, but becoming dated

I actually left the hard copy on the plane. DOH! But I'd already used it to make a general plan and then broke down and bought the digital version from lonelyplanet.com. (On a side note, the digital version and my smart phone were way, way convenient and new additions to the backpacking experience, but the ebook didn't have any pictures and some of the general sections at the beginning were missing like the highlights.)

This book gives a great overview of the country, and I always love the history and background sections in the beginning. In fact, I was able to have informed discussions and ask the good, information-gathering kind of questions about the revolution and political situation based almost entirely off what I read in the guidebook. I learned tons by talking to people while in Nicaragua too of course, but I wouldn't have know where to start or what to ask about without the LP crash course.

Some of the info about restaurants and places to stay is outdated, but the edition is from 2009, so that's to be expected. But tripadvisor.com and hostelworld.com and even the loneley planet forums are the best places to get that sort of time sensitive information anyhow.

I don't have much experience with any of the other guidebook brands, but I think a good rule of thumb is to go with the the one most recently published. Unless you're an LP diehard like me and you're willing to put in the extra research.

Poor sided information

This books gives the idea that Nicaragua is a dangerous place as the "rest of Central America", despite the fact that this country is among the 30 safest in the world.

It says be careful when you get down the bus, in an area which only happens to be the bus station from busses coming from Costa Rica, that indeed is a dangerous area, but any citi has red areas, well that is one.

But 95% of the tourist coming to Nicaragua come and land in different location, like the airport, and others which are more than safe.

Besides that, the book only shows one hostel in Nicaragua, which happens to be worst in town, there are at least 50 hostels, and B&B worth of mentioning, but seems like this hostel very badly rated in the country is paying advertising.

On the other hand there not many tourist books if you go to Nicaragua, that would be the only reason to buy it, but 60% of the information is inaccurate.

kindle edition really lacking

this review is about the kindle edition only and not the content of the book. this did not transfer well into kindle. too often linked text does not bring you to the right place. kindle guidebooks should be great as the hyperlinks allow one to easily jump to different places in a book. however, many of the links will bring you to a seemingly random spot in the book instead of the intended place.

additionally, one of my favorite features of lonely planet guides is the highlights section at the beginning of chapters. this transferred terribly to kindle - rendering the information unreadable. half of the information is lost. even by changing settings (smallest font size, line spacing, etc.) doesn't fully remedy the problem. i don't know why it's so messed up, but you lose great information this way.

the guidebook has good information, but i would recommend people to steer clear of the kindle edition.

Not my taste at all

I found this book to be confusing, without a plot and without poetry. I didn't find anything pleasant in it.

To compare it with The Name of the Rose, as a reviewer has done in the New York Times, is extremely far-fetched.

I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, and would have given it no star, if that was possible.

Unbelivably Specific

Amazing, if dense, work describing the production of Hindu-Muslim violence. He shifts somewhat drastically from the rest of the foray in his field by changing the methodology of interpreting riots in India. This is to say that he views the causes of riots in India as a analytical quagmire and, instead, chooses to focus on how riots are produced rather than why. A very impressive work with an astounding amount of research. Congratulations.

this book is a valuable asset for any sociologist and specifically people of inidan origin. Mr. Brass is a scholar par excellence and has shown is schlorship throughout his book. The conflicts between Hindus and muslims are very real and serves the purpose of vested intrests. I hope more people read this book and understand the politics of relgion

He holds an M.A. from Wheaton Graduate School of Theology, an M.A. from the University of Minnesota, and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. The standard for professional scholars.

I certainly agree with points made by one reviewer who described these volumes as encyclopaedic "database for specialists", but that is inconsistant with his being doubtful of the usefulness of some sections and their level of detail. He may never had to write an exegesis paper for a graduate level course on a biblical subject. Of course, I am giving away my point of view. That said, I would NEVER recommend this book, or any one of its volumes to the casual reader who wanted to know something about Revelation. I would not even recommend the Word series for pastors. For that, there are lots of really good books, such as Ben Witherington's social commmentary or Elizabeth Schussler Fiorenza's feminist leaning commentary, or best of all, Bruce Metzger's "Breaking the Code".

The Word series is for professors who teach in seminaries, and who deal with deep textual and translational problems. This is especially true of Aune's three volumes.That is as long as Nolland's 3 volumes on the Gospel of Luke, which is longer book in the Bible. Part of this may be due to the fact that Revelation may be the most poorly written book in the Greek New Testament. Even as late as Erasmus' 1516 edition of the Greek NT, we did not have good sources for the whole book. Erasmus filled in the gaps by back translating parts from St. Jerome's Latin translation. (These missing Greek pieces have since been found. Jerome did NOT make those parts up.)

I have used several different works in the Word commentary series, alway with some other commentary open at the same time. Almost invariably, the Word contribution is more even handed, more thorough, and more accurate in avoiding far fetched theories about the text. Aune, however, does stray from this standard in a big way with his theory, ably described in Mr. Garrow's review. I will also agree with Mr. Garrow's review of the first volume, and his source, Dr. Richard Bauckham, that unlike the Gospel of John, for example, Revelation is probably the result of a single hand, maybe not all in one sitting, but that would help to explain the atrocious Greek.

Reading Word commentaries can be a bit tedious, but if you are looking for information on an especially detailed matter in the text, this is the place to come. I think library search software may someday replace the Word series, but that time has not yet come.

Aune has hit a home run with his commentary on Revelation 6-16 in the Word Biblical Commentary series. Exhaustive in treatment of words, excellent in comparison of their use within Revelation, and extensive in offering alternate meanings with their sources, this book is a must for anyone seeking to update their collection of reference books on this last and controversial book of the New Testament.

Ok story, sh*t editing

The story flowed well enough, considering that it was a short piece of erotica and there's not a lot of time for character building in such a small space. There was a plot that, while based on a somewhat out-there premise, seemed reasonable enough that I could suspend disbelief. The sexy parts were slightly kinky, though not excessively so - they leaned more towards swinging, mild humiliation/verbal abuse, and semi-consensual/non-consensual rather than leather, whips, and chains.

But the editing! Oh, the editing. I think they had somehow used find and replace to fix some minor problem, without realizing that they had replaced the word "her" with "me" over and over and over. It's immensely confusing to see "and she put me hand on me clitoris" or some other similarly jumbled disaster of a sentence.

This was terrible. The premise had some promise, but it was rushed, and the extreme lack of editing made this almost impossible to read. The word "me" was used in place of pronouns repeatedly and there were multiple sentence fragments that didn't even make sense. If I could rate this with zero stars, I would.

The best in the market...

Barro's text has been unfairly criticized as not being mathematically rigorous enough. However, it has established itself as the standard text at all of America's top colleges - Harvard, Chicago, MIT, et al. - by relying on non-proprietary, supplementary, calculus driven texts written specifically to dovetail to its lucid and primarily social scientific, algebraic presentation. An excellent complement in this vein (and free!), is `Macroecomics' by Matthias Doepke, Andreas Lehnert, and Andrew Sellgren (often abbreviated DLS), developed during Doepke's and Lehnert's doctoral studies at Chicago. A mere google search of their names will turn up copies of the text. When assigned in connection with Barro throughout, its provides a mathematically rigorous, foundationally micro driven, market clearing presentation of modern macroeconomic theory for students whose have a solid grasp of differential calculus. The text would also seem to work well for individuals who want to largely avoid calculus while gaining a deeper understanding of macro theory beyond the introductory level.

Best book ever on macroeconomic principles

If you are an economics major and you do not know this book, buy it and read it. The market-clearing approach is the approach. Strong microfoundations, rational agents and a dynamic setting. And it is presented in an intuitive, elegant, and clear way with the aid of ingenious diagrams. It is one of those pieces that are introductory and advanced at the same time. It is rather unfortunate that most undergraduate textbooks do not follow the modern approach. Even worst, they do not teach thinks like the labor/consumption choice, savings and capital accumulation, Lucas island's model, public debt sustainability, current account as an intertemporal phenomenon, etc. Once you learn this approach well, macroeconomics will no longer be a headache for you and you will be ready to master more advanced materials. The only major shortcoming in Barro's book is that, despite it is in the 5th edition now, it has scarcely changed. Other have unsuccessfully tried to do this (Krugman, Farmer, and Sachs-Larrain). By the way, there is now in the market another book that heavily relies on the same approach and is a just a little bit more advanced and extends the approach to a few more topics(bank runs, for instance): Stephen Williamson's Macroeconomics. If you are an undergraduate, you shall have both Barro's and Williamson's books. You will not regret it if you later find yourself in graduate shcool. Finally, I agree with a former reviewer that an intermediate, more matemathically oriented, presentation of the approach is urgently needed. Fortunately, I do not really need it, but I feel confident that it will not take long for somebody to come up with a more technical presentation. However, after Barro's exposition, I wonder if one really needs the mathematical intrications. That is actually the beauty of the book.

LOVE IT!

I really enjoyed studying intermediate macroeconomics by reading this book. Maybe one additional reason why I enjoyed reading it was that Sala-i-Martin was my profesor, who personally knows Barro (they together wrote "Economic Growth"which I can also highly recommend).

About the Author
MARC LAVOIE is Professor in the Department of Economics at the Univeristy of Ottawa, Canada. He has been Visiting Professor at Curtin University, Australia, and at the univeristies of Bordeaux, Grenoble, Lille, Limoges, Nice, Rennes, Paris-1 and Paris-13. His main research areas are in post-Keynesian and monetary economics. He has written over 130 journal articles or book chapters as well as authoring Foundations of Post-Keynesian Economics. He is also co-editor of Central Banking in the Modern World.

What is Post Keynesian Economics?

Post Keynesian economics is a broadly defined school of economic thought that takes their inspiration from the work of J. M. Keynes. To arrive at an understanding of the essential features of this school, one must be presented a coherent and detailed explanation of the assumptions and theories that guide their thought. This is not really done in this book.

In fact, the book is not even really Post Keynesian. Post Keynesian economics (note the capital P and the absence of the hyphen) is an American phenomenon that was begun by Paul Davidson. But now, Paul Davidson is regarded as the most important "fundamenalist Keynesian" in a broadly defined field known as Post Keynesian ecnomics. Other traditions and views have found their way into this school, and have supplanted and implicitly rejected a lot of the contributions Paul Davidson made early in his career. This book is written from one of these views, namely, the Kaleckian view. The entire book is an extension and explication of Kaleckian thought. The reader is introduced to Kaleckian mark-up pricing, the French monetary (mesoeconomic) circuit theory, Kaleckian profit determination theory, Kaleckian growth models, and so on.

The author is doing a great disservice to the Post Keynesian school (broadly defined) by presenting this book as an "Introduction" to Post Keynesian Economics. Little to no mention is made of uncertainty, historical time, the essential properties of money, liquidity preference, and Minsky's Financial Instability Hypothesis. The author introduces these topics only briefly in the book, and then passes onto other (Kaleckian) things.

I would not encorage beginning students to read this book if they are seeking to gain an understanding of Post Keynesian economics. This is not Post Keynesian economics. Reading this book, I am convinced that the author does not believe in uncertainty, has a confused understanding of historical time, does not think it worthwhile to articulate Davidson's economic scheme, and thinks that Minsky's contributions are only a prelude to the French monetary circuit theory. READERS BEWARE.

Good, But not Post Keynesian

The book is an excellent one for introducing a different approach to economics than the standard neoclassical one.
However, this book does NOT show some vital concepts for post-keynesian theory, such as the liquidity preference, which are vital to understanding Keynes notions.

I would encourage everybody to buy this book, but warn them that this is more a Kaleckian than a Keynesian theory. It is, however, a very clear book that will surely open the mind of the reader to new perspectives, provided he has only heard the neoclassical approach to economics.
