About the Author
Nick Lake is a children’s book editor at Harper UK. He received his degree in English from Oxford University. The Blood Ninja trilogy was inspired by his interest in the Far East, and by the fact that he is secretly a vampire ninja himself. Nick lives with his wife and daughter in England.

A decent ending to an otherwise great series!

By now there should be no surprise that I anticipate and welcome any YA set in Japan, be it in a modern or historical settings, everything goes. I’ve read the previous two books in this engaging, imaginative and action-packed series and thoroughly enjoyed them, and I’m quite sad it took me so long to finally pick up the final book. What I discovered is that everything I found awesome previously is still there, but so are heaps of other aspects that just make the last book cramped and full of various plot devices, unnecessary additions, stalling, and despite including all these new things, the story somewhat dragged and felt really slow.

Zombies and vampires and dragons, oh my! That was the source of why I felt this final book lacking. Vampire ninjas as unique twist to the story was ingenious to me and when I heard about the dragon, it was still quite exciting, but when the zombies come around and then the god of death and why oh why can’t that creepily annoying villain Kenji Kira already hit the bucket, then it started to become a bother. There was for sure lots of action, close calls, incredibly tense and oh-my-god-what’s-going-to-happen moments, but all these heaps of bad guys against our poor trio of heroes, who had internal relationship issues as well, wasn’t really encouraging and pleasant to follow. Also, poor Taro, I genuinely felt sorry for him in this book, how much torture, physical pain, emotional pain, betrayal can one person bear.

Despite my whining, I still more or less liked the book, it had a really satisfying conclusion and I was left leaving the series with a smile on my face. I was really happy on how everything was pulled together and all the fates were more than earned. I also absolutely loved the confrontation between Lord Tokugawa and Taro, it was a long time coming and I was on the edge of my seat when they finally met for real, face to face. What a wonderful final showdown they had. Also, Nobunaga was a great villain in the two previous books and Kenji Kira was only disgusting, but the one with more momentum and the main adversary was without a doubt Tokugawa.

While the main gang of three were already from the start somewhat of a cliché: a boy with a destiny, his tough friend and a beautiful strong-willed lady love - I thought they made a decent team and I quite liked all three of them. I’m happy that everything wasn’t smooth sailing for them in this book and various issues came up that were in the long run unavoidable and the separations they went through were good for character development and strengthening bonds, especially for the two sidekicks. I’m glad that the both of them also were able to see each other and survive without Taro by their side all the time.

Overall:

I can say that this was an excellent series with imagination, fights, adventure, Japanese mythology and, most of all, my favourite setting, especially since feudal settings for Japan-themed YA books are incredibly rare. The final book was based on some aspects a slight let down, because there was just too much of everything in it, but it still worked and the previous two were so good that they compensated slightly for the spots lacking. I’m quite sad that this series doesn’t have as many readers as it deserves though, because I guess, it is somewhat of a niche mix of setting and genre. Still, give the series a try, especially if you enjoy historical adventure, action and manga.

Not as good as the first book

Not as good as the first book. Better than the second book. There are historical aspects of this whole trilogy that really bugged me. I know that authors are entitled to some leeway with the historical facts. Especially in a story about vampires. But throughout the trilogy you get the feeling that author is trying to convey the spirit of feudal Japan, yet is so far off with the facts. The truth is that it is obviously intentional as I am sure the author's knowledge of the period is pretty sound, he just takes it way off base. Granted this will only matter to those who are extremely interested in feudal Japan.

All in all it is a good book and it is worth reading. Though scholar's of the period will have to grit their teeth a bit.

A thrilling tale of good and evil

to give a review I feel one must of read all three books which I have. I found this fictional story to be a good read. learning about friendship, honor, lies betrayal and much more. that doing what's right isn't always easy but getting more satisfaction out of life and feeling better about ones self by doing what you know in your heart is the right thing to do. I found myself getting obsorbed in the story page after page. there are some inconsistencies as I read but all in all the author did a good job. I'm not good at criticizing. Mr Nick Lake wrote a trilogy I can honestly say was worth buying and would happy to read another fictional story by him.abg

1Corninthians 13 talks about 'the greatest of these is love' when speaking of faith hope and love. So it makes sense to have a daily devotional on love. It def. kept me on my toes, challenging me daily to walk in love!

A great devotional

This book changed my life. I thought I knew about the love of God, but this book really makes it practical for both receiving from God and giving to others. I love how the Copeland's defend God's honor from the many misconceptions that have crept into organized religion over the centuries. You will really gain a new perspective of God's love and our responsibility from reading this book daily. I marked up my copy as I went through it last year with notes and scripture notations. This is my second year through it and I really enjoy seeing the notes and comments I made last year.

He saves the best for last ...

First, the review from Dulles, VA is spot-on correct.
Second, note that this book does not present a complete history of "Islamic Spain" from 711 to 1492 but rather just the last 250 years from 1250 to 1500. If you're looking for material on Cordoba and the zenith of Al-Andalus in the 10th Century, this is not the right volume.
With the exception of the intriguing situation in Navarre, the initial chapters that survey the role of Muslims who continued to live within Christian kingdoms during the period covered by the book can be a bit trying. However, I was intrigued by the discussions of the efforts that were made to acommodate Islamic law within Christian kingdoms.
Once Harvey gets all that out of the way and gets to the story of Granada, the book takes wing. The story of the shifting alliances between and among the various Iberian kingdoms, the influence of North Africa from across Gibraltar, court intrigues, the development of military technology (especially artillery), the Christians gradual destruction of Granadan agriculture, and other factors combine to provide ample material for a rich story covering the 250 years of Granada and its seemingly inevitable downfall. The account of the siege of Malaga alone makes the book worthwhile.
Having recently travelled in modern Andalucia, I have a good sense of where the critical events transpired. I join in the criticism that the book's maps are disappointing. For example, several Nasrid rulers abdicated to "Guadix" but it wasn't until I pulled out my Michelin road map of Andalucia that I was able to locate it at all. Apart from that, I recommend the book.

Thorough and Scholarly

This historical study, written by the former head of the Spanish and Spanish American Studies Department at the University of London, describes both the last surviving Moorish kingdom in Spain and the situation of Moslems in Christian Spain during the same period. The author has drawn on both Christian and Moslem source materials, sometimes quoting them at length. He describes the politics as thoroughly as these sources allow. Some of the material on the Mudejars living in Christian kingdoms is too detailed to sustain the interest of most readers. On the other hand, the final chapters about the decline and fall of Muslim Granada have some of the fatal momentum of Greek tragedy. The biggest disappointment is the maps, the line and dot variety that give no hint of the terrain the contesting forces had to cross.

Excellent. 1st class study of Islamic Spain

An excellent book, Harvey uses prime sources such as wansharisi and ibn al-Khatib and goes into great detail of not only the battles and decline of Islamic Spain but also the daily lives of the people who must have been living in unbearable circumstances watching their kingdom slowly decline. What makes this book especially special is Harvey's study of what caused the decline of Islam in Spain (only Chejne has gone into such detail) I especially liked the translation of a speech made by a father to his children concerning the decline of Islam and Islamic culture in Spain. Yes there were expulsions, yes Muslims were driven from their home, yes day by day it was becoming more and more difficult for them to practice their religion but another important factor was their slow immersion into the Spanish Christian world.

An excellent book, highly recommended I will be buying the second part of this study.

is one of the best books of the series

This, my friends, is one of the best books of the series. It really ties up and resolves the story save for one thread--Goran One-Eye finding a way home. One of the things I liked the most was that every few chapters would change perspective to different characters; other than just focusing on one character (ex. some chapters would be about Goran and Davin while others would be about Felrad, Valora, or Yannis.) It was short without a lot of depth, but that just makes it a great fun read. Finally, and sadly, this book is out of print and was never published here in the States to my knowledge. BUT, you can get the e-book version, which I don't think ever goes out of print, for a price much cheaper than it would cost you to import it from overseas. If nothing else just reading all the ways Goran lost his eye are worth it.

About the Author

Dr Catherine Caballero, DPhil, MSc, P.G.C.H.S.C.E, BSc, Dip Ns, R.N is a senior lecturer at the University of Brighton. Catherine has a Doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Oxford. She has a background in surgical nursing, specialising in day surgery and in 1995 was appointed as the first laparoscopic nurse practitioner in the U.K. Catherine's passion is in the development of clinical skills and her interests relate to clinical decision making, clinical skill development and mentorship.


Fiona Creed MSc, BSc, R.N. is a senior lecturer at the University of Brighton. Fiona has a clinical background in general and neurological intensive care nursing and teaches acute clinical skills and post registration acute care nursing. Fiona is currently a PhD student at the University of Brighton where she is exploring clinical decision making during episodes of acute patient deterioration.


Clare Gochmanski is skills laboratory technician at the University of Brighton. She is responsible for managing several skills labs across the university sites assisting with simulation teaching, programming simulators and assisting with student skills practice session. Clare organises and coordinates the OSCE examinations at the University.


Jane Lovegrove MSc ,B Ed, R.N.T., RN. is a principal lecturer in clinical skills at University of Brighton. Jane's clinical background is in intensive care, cardiac surgery and coronary care. Her current clinical and educational interests are in grading clinical practice and using high fidelity simulation to assist students in clinical decision making.

Yes thank you, Im sure this edition of Catherine Cabellero's Nursing Osce, will help me pass my exams as it is most informative. It seems to be written by people who know the trials, ins and outs of clinical exams and the stresses associated with them.

An Important Book for Everyone

I purchased this book 4 years ago, after a car accident left me in chronic pain. At that time, I quite honestly didn't know how to handle the loss of my career, my hobbies & my independance - a lot to deal with all at once! Needless to say, I was scared beyond belief!!! Plus, since the accident was caused by another person who just wasn't paying attention, I had a seething anger toward this person who I didn't even know (and I still don't even know her name!).

Back then, someone recommended this book to me, and it was a tremendous help! The first time I read it, I just wasn't ready to let go of the negative feelings I was harboring - but a couple of years later I read it again, and it has made such a difference in my life!

In a nut shell, Dr. Jampolsky discusses the concepts of love and fear - defining fear as the absence of love. He shows how, in order for us to live a life filled with love, we have to let go of our fears - and to do this, we need to get rid of our need to analyze & contemplate the negative experiences of our past and the potential for negative events to occur in our future - we need to let go of the "what ifs". Stop waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Much of the info. included in this book is drawn from "A Course in Miracles", although you don't need to have an understanding of "the course" to gain from the insights in this book - I still haven't gotten around to reading "the course" myself.

If you like Marianne Williamson's writing, you'll definately enjoy this book by Dr. Jampolsky.

5 Glowing Stars for Broken Bonds

First I highly recommend reading Consensual (Club Imperial Book 1) before reading Broken Bonds. Book 2 picks up where Book 1 left off and there are quite a few things explained during the first book.

Broken Bonds is the continuation of the romantic and BDSM relationship between Nathaniel and Emmy. Emmy wakes up in the hospital after her brutal attack but she can’t remember the attack because of a blow to her head. What we do know is someone is out to destroy Nathaniel’s company along with Emmy herself. Emmy has many obstacles to try to overcome from her horrific few years under her stepfather’s brutal thumb. We finally learn the extent of the damage he caused her and why she turned to the BDSM lifestyle and became a Domme.

Nathaniel’s purpose in life is to love Emmy and do his best to keep her protected. He wants to get revenge on the people that have hurt Emmy, his brother Victor, and his business. Nathaniel knows one of Emmy’s attackers was his brother’s ex, Greg. But the second attacker is still a mystery because he was able to get away. Nathaniel isn’t a natural submissive but he does enjoy “playtime” with his Domme. He shows Emmy what true love is and helps break those bonds that tie her down.

I enjoyed this series so much. I loved the dual POV’s and it was a wonderful change to have the female Domme and male submissive. Nathaniel had his issues in the beginning wondering if what he felt when they were together was “right”. His head was telling him he shouldn’t enjoy this lifestyle but his body completely disagrees. I loved seeing his and Emmy’s relationship grow and change throughout the series.

This series had some hot, kinky scenes mixed in with some sweet, romantic moments, along with a little bit of mystery and suspense. By the end, you really wanted Emmy to be able to let go of her past and open up and let Nathaniel know who she truly is and why. There is a wonderful HEA, where everyone got what they deserved. I highly recommend reading this series.

What a success!!! A super second read. This story has it all- mystery, action, emotion, love, romance, exotic open minded and steamy sex. I enjoyed the characters and their own individual stories and personalities. Start with book one so you get the full story, well worth the read. Highly recommended read for those who are open minded and like adventure beyond the bedroom

Absolutely fantastic read...

When I picked up the first book and wasn't even half way through I knew I would need the second book.
I needed more, wanted more. I fell in love with the two characters. Emmy and Nathaniel. I wanted their relationship to work out. I was surprised to learn the secrets of Emmy at the of this book. I absolutely loved that Nathaniel was kind, caring and stood by Emmy no matter what. This series was a wonderful read and I loved how it ended. I'm a sucker for happily ever after and this sure had it. I was emotionally invested in the characters and Loved the idea behind the story. The characters were well written and thought out and I loved the ending.
