Great book on Manifesting

Just a very excellent book how to manifest what ever in life you want. Very well written, and after reading many other books on manifesting, I can tell you this one really works. Her 5 step plan is so very easy to follow, and just makes good sense. Get it, you won't be sorry, as I've been with so many others I've read.

I've sometimes wondered about Cinderella. How could she stay so sweet and cheerful when she gets nothing but abuse from her family? I think even the most good-natured person would become bitter and vindictive after a while. In this story, I wanted to show a more wounded side of Cinderella, the side that is hurting from being unloved. Love brings out the best in people, but hate brings out the worst.
So... about me: I live near Poughkeepsie, New York with my husband, three boys, and no pets. I have a hard time getting my boys to stop playing video games and read more books. My house is often a mess because I'm either out at my day job, or helping my kids with homework, or trying to squeeze in some writing and drawing. Yet I get frustrated when my house isn't clean. Other than strangers on the internet, I almost never tell anyone I know that I write books, because I have a weird insecurity that they won't take me seriously. But I never feel happier than when I'm working on my projects.

An Interesting Dark Story, but not Conclusive

I'm a bit conflicted about this story. On one hand, I love the changed perspective-- a Cinderella that isn't perfect and all good. But there's a reason that this story is usually so positive-- fairy tales need a moral at the end. The problem with this story, for me, was I didn't feel like there was a conclusion or a moral. Cinderella started off as not that bad. Perhaps a little bratty and bitter, but redemption was in view. Then... she got worse. Not really a fan of that plot. Fairy tales usually have a positive ending, because events happen that cause character development. For this "dark" story, it wasn't a moment that brought her into darkness and she pulled against it bravely. It was just a sort of "meh-- I'm pretty much a bad person". Cinderella had no real redemption or transition to evil. It's not a book that you finish and fell complete, or feel sympathy for poor misunderstood Cinderella. The conclusion is just that she's pretty much a bad egg, not particularly passionately evil, just casually meh. When you look at this book, it's probably best to consider the difference between a dark fairy tale (where there is a beginning, middle, and end of the character's darkness and you are left with a moral and a feeling of compassion), and a story with a dark fairy tale character (where the character is basically bad through and through).

SUMMARY: When Cinderella's dear father died, she was stuck with her stepmother and two stepsisters. Visited by her fairy godmother, she found that doing good deeds and behaving kindly earned her some white magic-- magic that gave her power to change her appearance, change animals to other animals, object to other objects. But Cinderella's heart festered with bitterness. She does good, but only with the end goal of evil. Her prize, the prince, may not be the easy and happy ending she searched for. The prince has his own darkness. And true darkness is not pleasant.

the not so best parts: I guess my main problem was Cinderella started out a bit vindictive and bitter. But in all honesty, she wasn't that bad. She even had moments of genuine kindness. I would have preferred to see development of her compassion, than see her slowly dissolve into bad habits. This truly is a negative story. There are a few pinnacle moments of badness, but they don't have the proper motivation to inspire compassion in the reader, or to make you think that there is possible compassion in the character. The result makes you think the character is shallow and very one dimensional.

the best parts: the magic is interesting, the step characters are realistic. The line between malicious but not ridiculous was perfectly toed with all step characters. The prince was a fresh surprise, well written, and it was interesting for Cinderella to basically see herself reflected in this faux-amazing man. A refreshing change of pace, and an interesting read.

All in all, the writing was good. The story was fleshed out, the characters sharp. A good novella. I just didn't like that this story didn't have a resolution or even real development of character. A novella shows, in my mind, important snipers of a story to bring a full picture. This felt like the beginning (of the end). The dark edginess might just not be my thing. For certain, I'm not eager to reread for a character that I just think will never change-- especially because she had so many opportunities for goodness-- and isn't particularly emotion provoking. If you're looking for something new and with a dark feel, this might be it for you. If you're looking for a dark fairy tale, or different fairy tale with a solid conclusion and moral-- this just doesn't have that structure. I liked reading this, and found it interesting food for thought-- but I didn't feel like I really wanted to see more of Cinderella. This just doesn't have THAT MOMENT-- the one where you cry for that transition to evil, or you cry cause you see the inner pain. This just felt like you wanted to shake Cinderella.

If you want to see a different Cinderella, this is your novella. If you want a full tale revolving around a dark Cinderella, where you see a clear ending and you feel sudden understanding and compassion towards an evil Cinderella, this isn't for you.

Mr. Happy is always happy and his neighbor Miss Grimm never is. Mr. Happy greets everything with a smile while Miss Grimm simply avoids everything. As time goes by Mr. Happy’s joy begins to spread into Miss Grimm’s yard and eventually her life causing her to change her name. This book works well with:
• comparing/contracting two characters
• charting character changes
• partner reading
I think the overall message is wonderful…greet each day with smile. I love how happiness prevails in the end. 3.5 stars!

A New Literary Classic is Born -- Worth 6 Stars

Life was hard back in the era Ms. Donoghue is writing about, folks. In fact, it was more than hard -- it was a nightmare ninety-nine percent of the time, especially for women and the poor. If you're expecting a larkish or sexy romp through Jolly Olde England, look elsewhere. This book will slice you to the bone.
This book affected me so deeply that I finished it days ago, yet I am still haunted by it.
Ms. Donoghue has created a tale that is absolutely SOAKED in unflinching truth. Her historical detail is so fascinating and at times, properly horrifying, that you will be shaken to your soul, yet you will not be able to look away.
The many themes skillfully woven throughout the book are powerful: mother-daughter ironies, the issues of slavery and servitude, injustice, the servitude of women, sexual politics, poverty, the haves versus the have-nots, humanity's general cruelty -- each issue is skillfully explored without one hint of judgement or preachiness. In fact, this book is all about the story; nothing more, nothing less.
Mary herself is an enigma. Why did she make the choices she did; what made her so strong that she tried to create a new pattern for her life? Was she insane when she committed her crime? Did her lifetime of gruesome, heart-wrenching experiences cause her to lose her mind?
The final scene of the book is so powerful that I am getting shivers just thinking about it.
I wish I could explain what makes this novel so very compelling; but I don't have the words for it. All I can say is that here is a shimmering treasure of a novel. Pass it up and you'll be missing a rare opportunity to be one of the first readers of what is sure to become a classic for centuries to come.

A breathless, poignant page-turner

Born in 1748 London to a family that barely scrapes by, fourteen-year-old Mary Saunders possesses nothing that isn't gray or brown. She yearns for something more, though she's not worldly enough to know what the "something" is until a simple red ribbon, suspended in the folds of a peddler's coat, inspires in her a need so great that she allows herself to be raped in payment for it. As a result of the encounter, Mary becomes pregnant and is banished from her home and family for her shame. Further brutalized in a gutter on her first night on her own, Mary is rescued by Doll, a prostitute who lacks morals but not kindness.

Almost inevitably, the unskilled Mary becomes a prostitute under the tutelage of Doll. She's soon seduced by the money she can earn and the colorful clothes that money buys, as well as by her newfound "freedom." Plying "the trade" on the dirty and pitiless streets of London, Mary grows up fast. She develops a knack for reading people and manipulating them; yet, emotionally, she remains a child, tender and disastrously confused.

Eventually, a series of misfortunes sends Mary fleeing from London for her life. She travels to distant Monmouth, where her parents had met before leaving to seek their fortunes in London. Concocting a story about her "dead" mother's last wish, Mary secures a place in the household of her mother's erstwhile best friend, a dressmaker.

For the first time in her life, Mary experiences a nurturing environment, has people who care about her. Although her arrogance wins her no friends amongst the other servants, she feels happy for a time and learns to be an excellent seamstress. But her old demons still haunt her. Her yearning for the fine garments and fine lives of her employer's clients becomes insufferable. She regresses and begins living the kind of double life that can't last in a small town.

Emma Donoghue's richly-hued prose unflinchingly recreates the brutality and degradation of eighteenth-century London's seamy side. Her secondary characters are anything but secondary; many of them could respectably carry their own stories. Not being conversant in the history of this period, I can't speak to historical accuracy, but nothing struck me as shaky or implausible. It was all frighteningly real.

Many of the editorial reviews excerpted on the cover of the trade paper edition contain phrases like "rollicking romp," "swoon of a novel," and "costume drama." Those are terms to be applied to a Regency romance; they are an insult to this dark, tragic story and its deeply conflicted heroine. I don't think the reviewers who made those comments actually read the book. It kept me turning pages and reading far into the night, because I saw the kernel of good in Mary and kept hoping she'd get some sense and do something right just once. Turn her life around. But she consistently botched her opportunities, achingly intent on self-destruction.

Thought Provoking and Dark

I didn't realize until the end of this book that Slammerkin was a fictionalized account of a real woman. Though little was known about Mary Saunders, Donoghue certainly brings her to life in this book.
The story is set in 18th century London where a young girl, Mary, makes one desperate decision that alters her life forever. A simple desire, one red ribbon, leads her down the road of darkness. Mary had a desire for beautiful things in her life but there wasn't much beauty to be found in this story. It is raw with realism and brutal in its descriptions. The author does not glorify the life of a prostitute. It is presented to us in all of its ugliness and is at times uncomfortable to read. This is the sign of remarkable writing. I was taken from my quiet life and placed in a time where horrendous things happened to young women at every turn.
I wanted to despise Mary, but I found myself sympathizing with her. Life was hard back then, and especially so for a young girl left to the street. Her dissatisfaction with her life was her greatest obstacle. To her, being a servant was no better than being a prostitute. In the end, her own impulsiveness caused her downfall.
I had no idea of the ending of this book before I picked it up. I was surprised to say the least. It was a dark read but worth the time. I will highly recommend it to others.

Deep relief in these trying times

When I ordered this book, I had no idea how important it would be. Illness, loss and grief as parts of this dear universe have been major themes in my life over the past few weeks. On one of those 'I can't imagine getting out of bed' kind of days, some wise voice inside me got me to open Dear Universe. I'm so glad I did. I read it cover to cover in the next few hours. I got out of bed feeling connected, supported and able to love all the complexities of what I was feeling. Since then, I've added it to the daily readings that I start my days with. It's been amazing how fruitful and insightful Yolo's words have been. It's rare that I find such spiritual wisdom woven together with social justice in such an authentic and expansive way. Thank you, Dear Universe!

Incredibly thoughtful, insightful, and personal.

This book is everything.

Ok, not EVERYTHING, but there are so many relevant topics. I like that I don't have to read it straight through, I can flip open to a page, read a section, and think about it the whole day. I use this sometimes for journaling topics.

This is one of three of my favorite horse books

I was surprised to see some negative reviews about this book. I have to disagree with the people that thought it was "too basic". From all the complete horse care books and manuals I've read this one seemed to be the most comprehensive. It seems to me that most of the complete horse care books are aimed at readers fairly new to the subject. After all, if you had already had a horse for 5 years, it would be kind of late to check out how to take care of it... I found the easy-to-understand text very accommodating and not at all annoying. The pictures were excellent (especially the angles on the "fitting tack" section) and 18 pages of "symptoms, cause, treatment, and prevention" charts on common horse illnesses and injuries were very comprehensive. I originally got this book from the library and decided to purchase a copy to keep since I found it so much better than most of the other "complete" care books. BTW my other two favorites are "Riding for the Rest of us" by Jessica Jahiel, and "From the Ground up" by Brenda Imus.

Great Book-I loved it

The book covers all the things you need to know about horses, from feeding, to blanking, to stabling,to riding, to training, to caring for a ill horse. It tells you how to measure for tack, how to put tack on, and what tack you need for your horse. I have read this book from cover to cover and would definately give it 5 stars! Great book, I would highly recomend it as a gift or for the horse person wanting to learn more about horses!

Excellent for new riders

This is a great book for first learning about horses, how to care for them, feeding, symptoms of illnesses, and it's simple to read and understand. It gives the basics for people who might want to own a horse for the first time so that you can know what to watch out for and take the best care of your horse. I'd recommend this book for first time horse owners, and for people working with horses for the first time. It's comprehensive and gives you a lot of great info.

Lots of good advices but...

Don't get me wrong, this is a nice book with lots of advices. The reason it scored lower is because I already read almost everything that was in it on ihaveanidea.org, in the 'Ask Jancy' section by Janet Kestin and Nancy Vonk. So you can imagine my disappointment when I started reading it!

Has all the answers any junior creative could ask

This is basically an Q/A book written by two highly respected CDs along with several contributions from other members of the creative world. Along with the Q/A there are short stories about experiences, helpful advice as well as explanations of the real world of advertising. Its like sitting one on one with an old friend, some of the answers are funny and just comforting.

Picke Me? Yes, Pick It.

Shakespeare was just another hack! This book rocks! And it's not only for aspiring ad people and juniors - actually every senior should read it! The only problem with this book is that it's just a teaser for Neil French's book...

EDIT: Yes, I STILL want to read Neil French's book after the whole female creative affair. Idiots...
P.S: I absolutely agree with Christopher Locke when he says that the couple of pages by Brian Millar is worth the price of the book itself. I don't know the guy but he should really write a book if he didn't write one already
