Daniel J. Harrington, SJ, is professor of New Testament at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry. He has a doctorate in biblical languages and literatures from Harvard University. A past president of the Catholic Biblical Association, he has written many books on the Old and New Testament, including the New Collegeville Bible Commentary on The Letter to the Hebrews (Liturgical Press, 2006).

Excellent presentation of Macabees I and II. This should be read by all who really want to know what Chanukah is really all about. This story is much more important for Jews than the light lasting eight days story.

Using this in our Bible Study Class

We are using this guide in our Bible Study class. We are a Protestant Church and therefore do not have these books in our Bible. We just finished a study of the book of Daniel and continuing with a Maccabees study seems appropriate. Daniel Harrington has done a good job with commentary from a Historical viewpoint. I am at serious odds with the author of this study who on page 5 states, “The book of Daniel seems to have been composed in 165 B.C.”. The NIV Study Bible introduction to Daniel says, “The book was probably completed c. 530 B.C., shortly after the capture of Babylon by Cyrus in 539.” There is archeological evidence that supports this as well. In my view for a church leader to say otherwise is to indicate that Daniel is a lie and therefore laying doubt to Biblical truth. I believe we all must be very careful in treading that ground!
