From blogs to Instagram and photo-zines to contact sheets: how 43 photographers approach their work

Find out how Alec Soth constructs his projects, why Trent Parke relies on old-fashioned Polaroids and hand-made books, and how forty-one other photographers experiment with new and old technologies, turn their photo-diaries into exhibitions, and attract audiences of millions via online platforms.

This book celebrates the creative processes of the modern photographic era, in which blogs and Instagram streams function alongside analog albums and contact sheets, and the traditional notebook takes the form of Polaroid studies, smartphone pictures, found photography, experimental image-making, and self-published photo-zines. Each photographer presents his or her sketchbook: several pages of images that convey his or her working methods and thought processes. These intimate, oneoff presentations are accompanied by engaging interviews that reveal how the simple act of pressing a shutter can capture and express a fully realized personal vision.

Three essays by the authors explore subjects at the cutting edge of contemporary practice. Designed to satisfy the most demanding of image junkies, this is an indispensable resource for anyone with an interest in photography or the creative process.

Review
Improvisational―which is part of its charm....The notebooks of Robin Cracknell and Saul Leiter are delicate and lovely, works of art in their own right. (The Literate Lens)

Gathers together the notes, research, and exhaustive preparation that went into some of contemporary photography's most interesting projects. From Roger Ballen's fever dreams to Viviane Sassen's controversial Africa photography, it's all here. (SFGate.com)

What's most interesting about Photographers' Sketchbooks is how it bridges the analogue and the digital, both of which have a firm place in photography today. (Hyperallergic)

Provides a behind-the-scenes look into the idea conception and through process of forty-nine photographers from around the globe. (Feature Shoot)

To many, it might seem that the art of photography is simply a matter of going out and snapping pictures. But there’s a lot more to it, and there’s ample proof in the scribbles, diagrams, and other materials found in Photographers’ Sketchbooks. (Slate)

"Sketchbook" Is Misnomer
By anon pd
The title is a bit misleading. I thought the entire book was going to consist of pages from photographers journals and sketchbooks--there are some examples, but the vast majority of pages are just reprints of photographs and a summary of each photographers' work. I wanted to see more process, and less final product.

Inappropriate title but an interesting read.
By ALBFRU
The title is deceiving. This book is about the approach or working methods of about 40 photographers. Some of them use sketchbooks or notepads, but some use no such thing. That being said it's still a fairly interesting read. And as I previously knew only a handful of the photographers presented here it has been a nice opportunity to broaden my knowledge. In some cases I've gone on to further explore some of the photographers. For each photographer the editor writes an introductory paragraph and then the photographer writes 2 or 3 paragraphs about their approach. This is followed by a selection of the photographers images. The reproduction of the images is not wonderful but appropriate for the purpose of the book. The binding is made of thick cardboard and covered with glued on paper. The edges are unwrapped raw cardboard and thus easily damaged. I don't expect this book to hold up well over time.

A phenomenal resource for any photographer wanting to put together a book or project
By Eric Kim
I recently picked up a copy of “Photographers’ Sketchbooks“, an excellent book written by Stephen McLaren (co-author of “Street Photography Now”) and Bryan Formhals (founder of LPV magazine and the popular Tumblr: Photographs on the Brain).

Alongside “The Photobook: A History Volume III” by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger it is the best resource for photobook making, the philosophies of editing and sequencing, the importance of collaboration, explaining the working methods of certain photographers, their philosophies, and advice and thoughts on publishing via the printed medium (and on social media).

It is a beautifully put-together book, with tons of great “behind-the-scenes” materials, via photocopies of the photographers’ actual “sketchbooks”, contact sheets, and personal notes. I highly recommend everyone to pick up the actual book — and use it as a great reference when putting together your own book or body of work.

I recommend everyone to pick up “Photographers’ Sketchbooks” and see all of the great insights in the book.

My ultimate summary of Photographers Sketchbooks is this: every photographer has a different working method, but every photographer is curious, passionate, open to collaboration, and puts his/her entire love and soul into what they do.

Continue to follow your curiosity, enjoy the journey of photography.

Shoot, publish, and be happy :)
