Ian Brady and Myra Hindley's spree of torture, sexual abuse, and murder of children in the 1960s was one of the most appalling series of crimes ever committed in England, and remains almost daily fixated upon by the tabloid press. In The Gates of Janus, Ian Brady himself allows us a glimpse into the mind of a murderer as he analyzes a dozen other serial crimes and killers.
Criminal profiling by a criminal was not invented by the dramatists of Dexter.
Novelist and true-crime writer Colin Wilson, author of the famous and influential book The Outsider, remarks in his introduction to Brady's book that one must first explore the depraved reaches of human consciousness to truly understand human character.
When first released in 2001, The Gates of Janus sparked controversy attended by a huge media splash. The new edition, the first in paperback, provides the reader with a decade and a half of updates, including Brady's letters to the publisher, both providing information regarding his own demented history along with demands that Feral House remove its unflattering afterword written by author Peter Sotos.

A mixed bag -- interesting in parts, but a bit tedious as a whole
By too_old_to_be_so_indie
I had high hopes for this book, but on the whole, I found it disappointing. Ian Brady's writing, while sometimes intriguing and insightful, gets tedious after a while... I found myself just skimming through it after a while. I was hoping for more. To me, the key to getting anything out of it is to be able to look at the text from a "meta" level -- understanding that Brady undoubtedly had his own agenda when writing it, and not viewing it as an objective look at the subject matter. A lot of reviews I've read (not just here, but around the web) attack the text as being self-serving and manipulative... but that's exactly the point. It _is_ self-serving and manipulative, and so what's interesting is seeing how Brady uses this opportunity to communicate with a wide audience that in many cases approaches the book with their own emotional agenda and baggage.
I'd also read a lot about Peter Sotos' addendum to the book, and I was very curious to read it. And while it does deliver some of Sotos' characteristic blunt, graphic honesty, it really could have used a good editor. I found it over-long, rambling, sloppy, and -- like Brady -- a bit tedious after a while. Condensed by about 50%, I think it could have been a strong and provocative counterpoint to the main text.

A Necessary Evil
By Daniel J Niedziejko
I missed this book the first time. Glad to have picked up.
A must read for anyone interested in the larger questions of what drives mankind to murder. Brady doesn't explore his own pathology, but in analyzing other killers histories, his own prejudices and fixations are revealed.
Peter Sotos' ending essay about Brady is brutal and numbing. The language. The structure. The psychological gymnastics of Brady are wholly dissected by Sotos' uncompromising text.
A must read.

1 Star for the Gates of Janus, 3 stars for Colin Wilson and Peter Sotos' information
By dressed in black
I bought this book because I've read the majority of Peter Sotos' work and I was curious what was his take of Ian Brady after so much has been written by him essentially praising him for the rape, torture and murder of an innocent girl, including the others of the Moors Murders. In Apocalypse Culture, he describes Brady as some kind of genius for the murders.
In the Gates of Janus, Brady obviously has taken his sources from the prison library and the few interactions with Serial killers he has interacted with. However, he avoids all discussion about the Moors Murders and says nothing new in his analyses of Serial Killers.
After getting bored for awhile, I went to Peter Sotos reaction of his hero, and I was shocked. He pretty much destroys him in writing. But, this isn't your usual Sotos writing you would expect to read. Here, he is pretty clear headed, devoid of fantasy, and he's disappointed of his hero like teenage fan whose favorite rock star won't take a picture with him or her. Brady admits he's developed some empathy and he has to live and think in a certain way in order to live with his actions. But, the closing quote pretty much says he's still the same.
Sotos also goes on way too long and I just find the Gates of Janus making me sleepy.
However, I do admit I learned the most information about these murders and about Ian Brady through Colin Wilson and Peter Sotos. That is the only reason to buy The Gates of Janus is if you don't know about the Moors Murders already.
